Sometimes No News Is Good News
I had to shut the television news off earlier this afternoon. I'd had enough of political rhetoric, of soldiers' bodies on the way home from Afghanistan, of civilian deaths on the base in Kandahar, gang-related shootings, of kidnappings, floods, fire, disease and starvation.
You know, I'm coming to realize that constantly tuning in to the news doesn't enhance one's life.
Oh, I certainly don't mean that we should hide our heads in the sand and be unaware of events taking place around us. But I do mean that over-dosing on it isn't healthy. Becoming angry and upset every day by local and world events is a waste of energy, unless our anger or upset spurs us on to do something for the betterment of the planet, even in a small way.
Ranting about the injustices of the world and the suffering of four-legged and two-legged Beings is useless. Complaining is useless, unless you take action to change the problem. Being angry and upset, bitching and complaining is not acting for the Highest Good of all concerned. It's just...a waste of energy, draining to our Spirits.
Probably we all know at least one person who endlessly complains, gripes, bitches, and rants all the time, without making an effort to change his or her life or help those who need it. Someone who seems to enjoy being constantly angry, always negative. Truly, those are the people to stay away from. They're emotional vampires; they'll suck life and hope right out of you.
You know, the happiest person I am acquainted with is my stylist. She never watches the news. She hears things via her clients and that's it. And she is cheerful and optimistic, excited and hopeful about life. Is she being naive? Maybe. I'm quite a bit older than she is and have been through too much now not to be somewhat (okay, a lot) cynical and jaded, but frankly, I envy her to some degree. Sometimes no news really is good news. Good news for our peace of mind. Certainly it works for her and her Spirit is not burdened by excessive suffering.
I think I'll curl up with the kitties and listen to CBC Radio 2's jazz programming now, keep reading my latest book. No television, no news tonight, thank you very much.
