Excuse me while I have a good cry

Just back after Derry's LONG vet visit--going and coming, traffic, etc.

Bottom line: I'm taking him in for dental on Wednesday, the estimate (based on 6 extractions) being just over $800. ("Holy Geezus Krist!" I swore, when I saw it, swore out loud right there.)

He doesn't have tartar, but the gingivitis is bad and she could feel neck lesions which indicate there are cavities that have gone through the tooth. The vet just won't know what's going on until he's under anaesthetic and she's probing around. He could need fewer extractions, he could need more. I can't let it go, it would only get worse and there's no way I want my baby to suffer.

She also gave me some antibiotic ointment for his left eye, which always has oozed a bit of green and always has been a bit red in the corner. L-Lysine isn't going to help with that, not with a bacterial infection. I'd like to know why the two vets I've asked about that issue before couldn't give me anything for it.

I'm sick for Derry's sake and just need a good cry over the financial aspect. Everyone knows how expensive our fur kids can be, but three cats + three dentals + Annie's hyper-t (all the blood work and meds) since the end of September 2009? Yeah, I do need a good cry. Not sure I'll particularly feel like posting this week on the Fuzzy Tales blog; I'll see how it goes.

I asked the vet if I could take Derry in the night before, because he's going to be so very hard to fast, and I left with it like that, me taking him back tomorrow around 7:30PM. I'm reconsidering that now, I don't want to be without him for even one night. But it would be extremely stressful to fast him, particularly since I'm up by 4AM every morning and can't drop him off at the clinic till 8AM at the earliest (when they open). On the other hand, because they don't do the dentals till 12PM (12PM - 3PM is their window of opportunity), technically if I keep Derry tomorrow night, I could get up and feed him around 11:30PM. He wouldn't have to starve for quite so long.

I'm not sure what the right course of action is there. He'll be more stressed at the clinic, but he's going to be frantic for food for hours on Wednesday morning. I'll think about it, I'm sure I can call them later and let them know if I decide for certain I'll keep him here.

Now excuse me while I go have that cry. And then maybe a beer. I could use a shot of rye, but don't have any.

Oh Kim!!

Listen you know you do these fab pics of flowers and nature and stuff - why don't you try setting up a paypal thing - auction your pics out - if you contact the cat blogosphere - maybe they can help in setting that up.

They've been most helpful - get that paypal button up here and at fuzzy tales and I'll link from my blog too. And get it up at the cat blogsphere.

Even if you get some donations - your pics are worth something - someone will love them, I love them, I'll buy some off you! Or donate or whatever!!

Kim, Kim, Kim, you're not alone!!!!
We all know how expensive kitties are - we'll help, we will!!

:-)
I think your plan of feeding Derry at 11.30 pm is a better idea for him. You know him more than anyone.
Big hugs to him, bless. And to you!!

Take care
x

Jenn is right -- we all need help now and again. I say it's time to put up a donate button and let ML know and I'm sure she'll put something up on the CB.

As they say it always seems darkest before the dawn -- it's just the suddenness of it all.

You know sometimes I worry about what the Vet says about the health of my kitties too. You just don't know sometimes...

I just can't deal with this now, don't want to auction off any pics because they're just snapshots and any fool can take a half-decent snapshot. And it's just too much work for me at the moment....Plus, I could see asking for help if I were destitute and almost-homeless. Maybe I suffer from an excess of pride, I don't know. But I have to be absolutely desperate before asking for any kind of help. Ever.

And what of the fence?

*Sigh*

All I want is to vent and sob this evening...I'll be better tomorrow.

And I called the clinic back and said I'd keep him, poor Derry!

I feel your frustration and stress, Kim. And sometimes a good cry is just what you need.

Over the last 2-3 months the Vet bills for my 4 cats have been way up there. And of course, it never comes at a good time either, does it? I drove to central Florida to save $400 on Gracie's spay, Whitey's annual and both of them were micro-chipped. Then the very next week Grayson had an emergency that cost nearly every bit of the $400.

And Gracie still may need to have her Special Leg amputated at some point down the road.

What's a fur-mama to do, but love them and do everything we can to keep them healthy and happy? When those overwhelming things happen, it helps to remember how many moments they make us laugh, give us comfort and fill our lives with so much joy.

It's worth it! Big hugs.

Brings back memories of the time when Sher had pancreatitis. Sorry, sweet Kea.
I think it's wiser to leave him at the vet than starve him at home, but that's me. It's very sad when the kid cries for food and you cannot give it to him.
Sorry... I hope all gets better soon.

Oh I am so sorry things are so tough right now. If I could I'd come round with a bottle of rye (whatever exactly that is, wine is about as far as I go) and a big hug. Lots of love to you xxxx

We are sorry to hear about this, vet bills can quickly add up! We insure our kitties but poor Pricilla was too old when we got her to get full cover (grr)
We hope that Derry won't have to get too many teeth out...
Purrs and hugs, Keiko, Kenji & Pricilla

Never ever be afraid to ask for help, financial or otherwise. It's good karma for us to help, and due karma for you to accept help. the kitties merely are the karma-conduit!
It sounds nutty, but by golly, I've seen it hapeen a hundred times.
Felix and Grayce together cost over $2000 USD last February, our entire tax refund and then some. So no vacation this year.
Have a good sob...and I highly recommend sailing with Captain Morgan.
