I Used To Be Able To Bake

Really.

Nothing special, just the usual cakes and cookies and loafs.

But something has happened to that ability in my peri-menopausal middle-years. Witness this so-called fruit upside down "cake."

It's supposed to be a cake. Not a biscuit-like thing with fruit on the bottom. Cake.

But I accidentally put in 1/2 TBSP of salt instead of 1/2 tsp and had to guess at how much to take out, and I think I put in too much baking powder.

How such a simple recipe (my mom's basic one-egg cake) can go so wrong is beyond me.

I'm stepping away from the stove now....Permanently!

Fortunately, I didn't do anything absurdly "off" at work today, though the week is young.

Oh Kim!!! Well I think it looks like a very light doughy bread type topping! Like an upside down sweet bread! and that sounded really nice to me!! :-)

I say so long as it tasted nice and you enjoyed eating it is what's most important!!! If all else fails, I'd spread some chocolate spread on top!!! Makes it look like a cake with chocolate frosting!! Yum!!

Hugs!! Take care

Actually from a person not too fond of bread or cake- biscuit sounds better... I'm sure it is a yummy giant biscuit!

I cannot bake for the life of me.... Crazy says it's because doughs don't like me either.... errrr...
I too have lost my ability to cook even since the 40's have arrived. Just don't have the patience for it.
Ladies, you are scaring me with all this talk of post 40 baking failures.
Kim put it down to a one off science experiment that didn't work out the way you hoped otherwise the alternative is a life without cake..doesn't bear thinking about.

I don't do as much cooking any more unless the kids are here. Just minor everyday nothing much's for myself.

I am porting 5 years worth of blogs from MSN Live Spaces to Blogspot as they are closing Live Spaces completely down. Blogspot will allow a third party in to slurp the blogs and make a book of them which is my purpose of porting them over. It's for the kids when I have gone to the Bridge. :-) There is a lot chronically my years of 12 hr. shift rotation. They had to live with that as did I.

Just thought I would say why you will see older ones a month at a time. I usually do that every few days.

Kim, I am like you, my baking abilities have disappeared, and in fact I threw out all of my baking powder and soda this weekend. What skills I had have dried up with my ovaries I think.
