The Usual Run-Around!
How can someone like me, with no family here and no obligations, still be running around like a mad woman every Saturday?
I took an early bus (7:20AM) up to Wal-Mart to pick up a few things (they're open 24/7 now, till Christmas, though that makes little difference to anyone who relies on public transit--lol). Then popped over to Zellers and then to PetSmart (lucked in on a sale on ProPlan, which is about the only canned food Derry will eat). Had several heavy bags that I lugged home (including 11 pounds of pet-safe driveway de-icer, for the impending 15 to 25 mm of freezing rain tomorrow). Oh, my aching shoulders! That was my weight workout, never mind pumping iron at a gym. Okay, so it probably wasn't more than 20 pounds altogether, but it felt like 50! Yeah, yeah, I'm out of shape, I know.
Once I had everything home and in the house, I headed out again for round 2 and finally made it home by 12:30PM, to do all the house work and laundry. How exciting! Actually, while I was complaining to myself about the endless work, I thought of Sheilah (Mom's friend, the one who is terminally ill with pancreatic cancer) and knew she probably would give much to still have more years of laundry and house work and errands to do. That shifted my perspective in a hurry, believe me.
And to shift topics a bit: We had our office holiday luncheon yesterday. Went to Curry Original, which is one of the best places to eat in this city. Had a wonderful meal, then went to the Sleepless Goat café for coffee and dessert afterward. It's been around for years, is a co-op run restaurant. A go-up-to-the-counter-and-get-your-food type of place, small, funky 70s-ish decor. But the best food around! And the desserts...oh, to die for. I had the best piece of carrot cake I've had in decades. Seriously. And they have vegetarian and vegan dishes that are scrumptious, so I was told by one of my co-workers. In fact, her blueberry cheesecake was vegan, though apparently one can't tell it's not cream cheese. I hadn't been to the Goat in years, but I think I'll have to pop in from time to time, for a treat. I'd love to try their chai -- I was going to have one yesterday, and skip dessert, but then I saw their carrot cake and was lost. I can pass up a lot, but not carrot cake, creme brulé, bread pudding, or apple crisp. You'd think it would be something chocolate-y that I couldn't pass up, but that's not the case at all.
Tomorrow will have to be a day for more laundry and puttering around, because even though I do have two pairs of ice grippers for the soles of my boots, I'm not being foolish enough to venture out in the freezing rain. That's the down side to winters here, with the proximity to Lake Ontario. Frankly, I'm counting down the days till the Winter Solstice and the return of more daylight....and hoping for an early Spring.
So I hope everyone is having a good weekend, that everyone stays safe and isn't getting too stressed over the unrealistic expectations of the season.

I agree about housework...Scott does the lion's share of all the housework yet I never fail to have stuff to do on my days off. Of course he's Not Allowed to do laundry, I think men are genetically programmed to mix whites and colors!
