Once again I made a spectacle of myself for the neighbours
So I got home and found that Niko, the neighbour's declawed mighty hunter, had caught another bird and left it, uneaten, on the ground by my shrub. This is what, the fourth or fifth bird now? Plus that one rodent he had for breakfast by my welcome mat one morning in the late spring or early summer, leaving the entrails for me.
I debated leaving the bird for him to gnaw on at his leisure, but then realized it would attract vermin.
Off I went to fetch a plastic bag, and I scooped it up, a bit disturbed by the vibration from the bag. Gaaggh, I thought, was it still alive? But the neck looked broken.
I put the bag down on the step, crossed my fingers the poor bird truly was dead, then opened up the garage door. Picked up the bag...and heard a buzzing, felt another vibration.
OMG, I freaked out! Screamed my fool head off, at the top of my lungs, and threw the bag up in the air and away from me, to have it land half way down my little driveway. Two big flies flew out of the bag; thank goodness it wasn't the poor bird, barely alive and struggling. But I could see, out of my peripheral vision, the 20-something neighbours down the street turning to look at me. Probably with the thought, "There's that crazy middle-aged cat lady again." And I suppose that would be kind. Yeah, whatever. Who knows what their lives will be like when they're getting close to fifty. Maybe they'll be picking up dead birds from beside their front step too. LOL.
Anyway, the bag with the dead bird went into the garage, while I tried to convince Niko to stop hunting or at least to leave his food on his own doorstep. I don't think I was successful with either suggestion.
I hope your day hasn't involved any dead prey. :-P

Still more snapshots from the Halifax trip, taken Thursday September 15th. Mom and Harry in their living room, unfortunately with shadows behind them.
This is the casino. We dropped Harry off here while we strolled around Historic Properties.
It was so foggy, I had to increase the brightness on most, if not all, of the snapshots.
It's a monument for the Portuguese settlers, I believe.
One of the ferries that runs between Halifax and Dartmouth. I certainly had to up the brightness and contrast on this, because the ferry was barely visible at all. I don't miss Halifax's dreary, foggy weather!
