The TV? It's Dead, Kim.

I found it quite amusing that my almost-eleven year old analogue TV died this morning. I should say the picture died. The sound is fine. Doesn't work with a DVD, either, so it's not the cable connection.

Well, they don't make things like they used to!

So I'm going to have a look around for a good bargain on a 32" or 37" LCD TV, because my dad generously offered to send the money for one. Boxing week is the time to shop, if anything's left. I suspect a lot of people prefer 40" and up, but my space is small and I don't want or need anything that large.

Funny, though, how I already miss having it. I don't watch much TV: news, weather, documentaries. Love "Time Team" (stop groaning, please), "Antiques Roadshow," etc. Have never seen any reality shows, any of the current comedy or drama shows and am not interested.

Yet I tend to have the TV on a lot as background noise, as "company." The image of other humans, the sound of voices. Somehow radio doesn't seem quite the same.

So if I find a good bargain this week, great. And if I don't, well, I'll wait till Dad visits later this year, and cancel my basic cable service in the meantime. No need to pay $34 per month for nothing.

I'll just bet, though, that the TVs made today don't last even eleven years!

Oh I miss my analogue tv! My silly stupid new tv with freeview cable thingy wireless blah blah is stupid. I can't get three out of the 5 main channels, barely get two BBC channels but have absolutely no problemo getting the shopping channels or the ones with endless repeats and commercials! LOL!! Apparently the signals where I live aren't very good or something. Thank heavens for "catch up channels" on the pc!

Ok, I'll calm down now..! LOL!

I do hope you get a good bargain and one that works for a bit! At least visually! I keep meaning to listen more to the radio - but somehow radio doesn't do it for me. If I could knit while listening maybe I'd be able to concentrate but I tried listening to radio programmes a few times - talk radio, progs on books and debates and suchlike and realised I had to sit and not do anything, so got very bored very quickly! My other senses need to be engaged.

Anyway! I've just been watching BBC's take on Great Expectations (one with Gillian Anderson as Miss Haversham) and am totally loving it!

Did you ever watch Frasier? They did an episode where they got involved with the Antiques Roadshow and that was ever so funny!

We recently changed out the monstrosity in the den. We wanted a 'smart' tv, so we ended up smaller in size. We got a 46" and the price is $500 less than the first 46" I purchased about 5 years ago. Amazing. You will find great prices in that size range. We went with the Sharp Quattron and I have to tell you it has a better picture than my Sony Bravia.

I was sad when our old TV stopped working. We bought it at such a great price and it lasted over a decade! Our motto is that we only buy something new when our old stuff stops working.

I'm just the same with Tv if I'm in on my own, I really do like it for company - I only tend to put the radio on if someone else is in! I remember clearly my abslolute outrage and shock on being taught, at 17, about built in obsolesence - making things to break down rather than to last as long as good workmanship allows seems like a crime, and yet we're stuck with it. At my age though I'm convinced like you that the newer the thing the less it will last. Hope you find a bargain. xx

my analogue tv is still working *touch wood* - however i would love to have a movie screen-like tv that you can sort of fold away when you don't use it, it takes up a lot of space, a tv (and no i will so not get a big screen one when i have to succumb into getting a new one...).

fingers crossed that you will find a decent tv that will fit your needs in the sales!!

ps m is glued to the tv when time team is on, myself i can't stand it;) no matter how british it is ds
