That was worth the stop!

I stopped in at a vet clinic (not mine) on the way home, to pick up a Feliway refill. (I did not want to call my clinic and don't think they would carry it, anyway. It's not a drug, after all.)

I was impressed with the the young woman who helped me. Her dad owns the clinic, as well as another, and they have a farm with horses, etc. She didn't scoff or scorn at my desire for a natural product. Said she got her rescue dog onto a good food, not from the vet. She mentioned that because she had said they have a calming food for cats (?!) and I said, almost apologetically, that I steered away from corn, soy and wheat...well, most grains, except that one of their two current kibble brands has rice. (The boys get about 2 TBSP per day.) Anyway, that's when she mentioned what she feeds her dog and how it's made such a difference to the dog's health.

I got the Feliway (I need another, but they had only one refill in stock) and she also showed me a natural product for cat and small dog stress relief (capsule you can mix with food, once a day). I didn't write the name down, will call them tomorrow about it. She wasn't sure if it was okay for daily long-term use, said she'd ask the vet about it. The fact that they even carried something impressed me. She said they have a client with a very nervous cat that's on it, and it works very well for that cat without doping it up, but she's not sure if that's just short-term (as needed) or not. I got a good feeling from her, at least. It's the same clinic I took "Toby" to last May, to be neutered. It would be worth me checking them out, I think. I'm not rushing to switch clinics, but keeping it as a real possibility. They're actually only 2 kms from my house, half the distance of my current clinic, though their hours aren't as long and they specialize in horses, not small animals. I talked to her about Derry and while didn't say which clinic I was with currently, did stress I would be interested in finding a vet that was open to other approaches first.

Anyway, I left feeling a bit more hopeful. Not thinking that there are any vets in this area who have any alternative health care knowledge, but just that there might--might--be a vet who doesn't so clearly (yet tactfully) scoff at and disapprove of non-drug options.

Universal Blessings, Light and Mercy to All Beings.

Oh wow!! What a great find!! I say trust your instincts and your gut feelings and this clinic sounds (fingers crossed) a great alternative for Derry - cos seriously I still balk at the thought of anti-depressants for cats!! There must be other more natural and effective methods!

Take care

I understand how you feel.
With Abby's (what I feel) misdiagnosis last January of IBD I feel very unsure about the only Vet I have ever taken Abby to.
I havent made up my mind yet as to what is best to do.
Here's hoping this Vet is a possible good source (at the very least) for your boys.

I wonder if the stress relief product you are referring to is Anxitane. It is a natural supplement that is suppose to calm. I use it with Rose and it has made a tremendous difference. My vet sells it too. I'm thankful that the vets at the clinic I use all seem to prefer natural options if they are an option. When I wanted to try Prozac for Buddy, I had to practically twist their arm to make it so, they wanted me to start with Feliway and Anxitane first (both of which I tried and he wasn't responding to).

A good vet is hard to find, once found, hang on to them! I'm doubly thankful that my good vets are next door to my house - no car ride trauma for the cats or me.

That's sounding really promising.

That sounds great....I say it is always better to keep your options open...and change vets (or doctors or whatever) if you feel like you aren't getting the service you need or desire.

It is so important to have confidence in your vet and/or clinic!!! I love my vet and would follow him to the ends of the earth :-)
