Oh, that's so NOT good!

So, my bathroom vanity lights have been flickering for a week or so. Okay, I thought, one of the bulbs is ready to die, no problem. I even remembered to bring up a couple of spare bulbs from the basement a few days ago.

Then last night no lights would come on when I flicked the switch and I thought, wow, all three bulbs burned out at once, how odd, but whatever. I got up on the counter to change them and realized they were the new long-life kind and shouldn't have burned out, so switched out only two bulbs and flicked on the switch, still nothing. But something seemed odd with the nightlight that was plugged into the outlet by the sink, so I jiggled it and presto! the vanity lights all came back on.

Well, that's not right, I thought. Something amiss there with the wiring. Then something seemed to happen with the outlet and I shut the switch off, pulled out the night light and took the face plate off the socket.

Um....Even I know this isn't a good thing to see!

The inside of the face plate.
 No words needed here.
So of course I freaked and rushed to the basement to turn off the breaker. Luckily the bathroom and two back dens are on a separate one, so the rest of the upstairs was unaffected.

I have my former cubicle-mate's hubby coming early tomorrow AM to fix this--he's an electrician by trade. (He'll talk to me about my kitchen counter at the same time...which I'm still waiting to have replaced, btw.)

Anyway, I crawled into bed last night, stiff as a board with tension and afraid there was a fire in the walls, and I lay there and wondered if we all should sleep downstairs in case we had to evacuate. Next thing I knew it was midnight and I thought, well, if nothing's happened yet we should be okay.

So the breaker will be staying OFF until this is fixed! Pretty scary, IMO.

Peace.

You did the right thing and since it's turned off now I'm sure you're feeling better about it. I'm sure you'll have your cubicle mate husband check out the rest of the electrical just to be safe. Hopefully it's nothing more than just needing a replacement of that connection on that plug.

Yes, lucky, nothing clever about it. Just an angel on my shoulder, perhaps. When P comes to replace it, and then do the counter top (whenever), I'm going to ask that he test every single outlet in the house for a short.

It's a good thing you have the acquaintance of a trusty electrician. Seeing something like that can be unnerving, all right, but with the breaker off, you're safe. Still a bit scary, though.

I would have called a company, likely the one he used to work for (20 - 30 years before he left there). But I'm glad he's able to come and do it. It's not free work, but at least he won't overcharge me.

Scary stuff. At least you know you can trust the electrician who is coming to be carful and thorough. Good connection.

I'm glad you found the problem before it became a disaster. Hopefully it is a quick and easy fix (perhaps it only needs a new outlet?).

Could one of the boys sprayed into the socket?
So very scary, hope everything is all fixed soon.
OMG!! thank goodness nothing serious happened! You are also BLESSED to know someone who you trust that can not only fix it but not charge you the ridiculous amount that a stranger would! Hoping all is fixed WELL and soon for you!

That's very scary! Good catch before something worse happened. Hopefully it's an easy fix. I always say I'll try anything once around the house if water or electricity doesn't run through it. But that's a great example of why it's best to know your limits. It's great that you know someone trustworthy to help get it fixed.

OMG, that is really scary! I'm so glad nothing worse happened, and that your friend is coming over to make sure things are right before you use that circuit again.

Kim, it's good that you thought to take the face plate off... and to turn off the breaker. Let us know what your electrician says about what caused this and whether it really was a fire hazard... which it seems like it would be to me.
