Lights Out!

Our area had a rare power outage last night, from about 8PM to 11PM. Turned out to be a problem with one of the underground cables--I read that on our utility company's public Facebook page.

I have to say how unsettling it was, not being without light because I have enough LED candles and flashlights, but to be without background noise.

Gone was the sound of my two air purifiers, my two white noise machines, my fridge and my TV, most of which run almost 24/7 (not the TV!).

I actually found I couldn't settle down and sleep, it was too quiet. The "fleas" next door went out to play till it was too dark, then surprisingly they made very little noise after that. I drifted off to sleep for about an hour, then woke and lay in bed wondering how long my food would last in the fridge/freezer and worrying about trying to replace it all. So it was a huge relief to hear everything come back on just after 11PM and have the clock radio flashing. I got up to turn off/reset as needed, and it was after midnight when I settled down again, to fitful "sleep" till 4AM or so.

It's a bit of an eye-opener to realize that I'm so dependent on background noise. I think I would be less so living in other circumstances (i.e. a detached home in a quiet neighbourhood where neighbours aren't on top of you). But as long as I'm in my current residence, I need that background sound as partial cover and distraction.

So I'm very glad the power outage lasted only a few hours!

Peace.

A seemingly tranquil setting in a very busy area,
snapped last week when I was heading to my MRI.

that happened here a few months ago. It was astonishing how much ambient noise I took for granted every day -- and especially night. It's certainly food for thought. Our quiet loves aren't as quiet as we think!

I long ago bought into "noise" to help me sleep. I had to use a floor fan to drown out the noise as I was working 3pm to midnight shift. Then I became addicted to it. Now I need the radio to drown out the tinititus in my ear at night. I listen to Internet radio and if the signal drops I immediately wake up. Yes quiet is disconcerting.

Glad your power outage wasn't too long. I am the opposite and like total quiet when I sleep. Chuck has tinititus in one ear like Angel Abbygrace and sometimes will listen to the radio with earbuds. Now if we run out of batteries for flashlights I'm not happy! I have to read before I go to sleep, Have a good day Kim.

Three hours was just about the limit for not worrying too much about the food. Glad the power came back on again at 11pm. The Mom here uses the tv often to get to sleep - total quiet and dark is a bit spooky.

We lose power often here even tho they supposedly fixed this problem! It is so quiet where we live that I enjoy the power being off - no noise at all. Unless we need heat or AC!

As much as I like peace and quiet during the day, I need white noise to fall asleep at night. Since Sadie would get hot easily and pant, we've always had a fan on at night which we've continued since we lost her. On the one hand I think it should be quiet so I can hear if something happens in the night but on the other, I need it to sleep! Such a catch-22!

I love the silence. I have the noisiest refrigerator ever invented but once in a while at night it goes into quiet-mode, and it's very peaceful. But it's astonishing how used to things we get.

Pretty picture!

I have a white noise machine but it must be kind of a cheap one because I feel like I can hear actual noise every so often and it drives me crazy. It's hard to explain. Anyway, I found out about a white noise app for my phone. I love it! It comes with a ton of different sounds (even a cat purr!) but I just use one called "brown noise" at night. Sometimes if my husband has the TV on too loudly and I'm trying to read(our place is very small), I'll put the white noise app on and listen to lapping waves.

Thank goodness your power came back on so soon!

I can so relate. I always have to have something going. The silence is deafening. I am glad all is well, now. Stay safe.

I'm with you, a few hours without power and I tend to get anxious. In my house the noise is the furnace fan which runs continuously to circulate the air between the basement and main floor. I don't notice it until the noise isn't there.

Isn't it nice to find a peaceful spot in the midst of the city. Natural settings are always my favorite, especially if there is water in the area.

I like the sound of the air purifier (fan) to sleep to and without it is hard to sleep! We almost never lose power though, not sure we ever have in the ten years we've been here.

Glad your power wasn't out too long! It's amazing how REAL silence is overwhelming when we're used to the noise in our regular lives, isn't it? :)
