On a different tack...Friday's house stuff

Backing up from the events of Friday night, I had the master bedroom window replaced, at last:

The room prepped, prior to the installer's arrival
The old window out...amazing how much larger the hole in the wall seems!
The new window in place, after some struggle on the part of the installer and his assistant.
He actually had to pry the window into place and damaged a bit of the vinyl frame.
With the trim on, however, it's covered up.
Bonus: There's lots of spray foam around the window now! (None at all before.)
I won't describe the three hours in total that I spent trying to put up the new curtain rod I had purchased. Suffice to say it was disastrous, with many holes in the mushy drywall. No anchor would hold and I made huge holes in the wall. However, friends Robin and Chuck came up (or maybe it's down) today and Chuck was able to install the rod, minus any anchors at all. Having done it so much, he knew just where to place the screws. He even patched the holes and sanded, plus reinstalled my roll-up blind to ensure it was secure. He really went above and beyond, and it was fiddly, time-consuming work. I so appreciate his efforts...and their friendship!

New rod and new sheers, with my existing blackout panels on each end.
Difficult to see, with the sun beaming in.
While the installer was here Friday, I decided I might as well use the time to pull up the laminate in the upper hall, in preparation for next Saturday's new floor installation.

The installer had offered to take anything I had on hand to the dump (even before I decided to take up the old laminate), so while he was cleaning up I took the old stuff to his truck and put it on. He wasn't paying the dump fee, so apparently he didn't care. Bonus! I saved myself $50 on labour charges by pulling up the old flooring myself, and now the floor guy doesn't even have to dispose of it. Great!

The last bit of home improvement was the installation of the new bathroom light fixture today, also courtesy of Chuck.

It's funny how things work out. I had wanted a bronze, downward facing fixture and I ended up with a brushed nickel upward one. Actually, this fixture was supposed to face downward (that's how it was in the store and on the box), but as it turned out, downward meant the glass fixtures were at the top of the mirror. So Chuck just flipped it up. And here I learned something: You can install these kinds of fixtures either way. Had I known that, I would have bought my preferred bronze-coloured one. LOL. But everything now is brushed nickel in colour, so this is the way it will stay, and I'm satisfied.

So that was the productive part of my extra-long weekend!

Both boys survived, though Derry spent the entire four hours the window guy was here under the futon bedspread and pillows:
Today he alternated between hiding under the couch cover (he made quite a visible lump on the back of the couch!) and coming out and lounging around. Poor little bear.
Nicki was pretty much his "love me people" self.  :-)
All in all, I've had a bit more adventure than I prefer this weekend, but lots got done and for that I'm grateful and appreciative.

Peace.

Holes, many holes...that is why I will never, ever, ever try installing a curtain rod on my own. Because that's what happened in my old house - I suspect the new owners didn't realize it until they took down the rod and blinds. AND it is why the two new windows that were installed into the spare bedrooms when I moved into this house still have no window coverings. I think it is terrific that you have the gumption to try it on your own (because from what I've seen most of the time you manage very well), But it also wonderful that you have such good friends who will give you a hand with these type of tasks.

Poor Derry, he's going to be so happy when the renovations are complete. Hopefully the neighbours decide to move and that noise level stops too!

Well, now I have a better idea of what to do with the curtain rods, if ever I need to make a change. But it's just easier to have someone who knows what they're doing...and who has more arm and upper body strength too!

I am amazed at the absolute fabulous progress you have made! Your home is so lovely and YOU did it...well, what you could. Certainly not the installations. But I am proud of you and the boys.

It does all look great. I just wonder with your light fixture, if having it up that way will make it difficult to change the bulbs? Being not tall myself, I find it difficult enough with them hanging down.

The renovations are sure getting done. Despite the neighbours, it was a productive weekend. I'll bet it feels good to get things done.

It was lovely to see you Kim and the boys! Sometimes just an extra pair of hands makes a big difference. I love how your bathroom and bedroom look. Very serene. We will be back in a month or so to do your trim.
Take care!
It's looking lovely Kim! Good for you :)

Thanks so much. It's slow going, and really not much has changed, but even small steps are great!

Thanks, that's sweet of you to say. It's slow progress, but at least a few things are getting done, at long last.

I had to stand on the vanity to get to the old, bare bulbs anyway, so I'll do the same with the new one. :-)

Thanks, I'm glad there was lots of positive stuff taking place too!

It does feel good, I've been living with things torn apart for years, or very badly done, attempted by me, Dad, etc. So even though labour charges aren't cheap, it's worth it to get things done properly!

Thanks, Robin! I will not be upset if your house moves quickly and you're not able to do any of the upper trim...I don't hold you to that, you're both very generous to have offered. If you can, AWESOME, and if not, that's OKAY. I will get it done regardless and that's the one thing I'm so looking forward to having finished. Since you've seen what a state my trim is in (or isn't in, as the case may be), I know you understand why. LOL.

Thanks, Laurie. Small steps, big money. Hahahaha. At least it's a great start for me, as I move forward with the goal of finding an affordable detached home somewhere. :-)
