I *AM* an Ikea Goddess!

Seven hours, two yesterday for the base cabinet and five today for the doors and shelves and getting all the TV (etc.) equipment transferred over.

The problem was (a) the typical crappy Ikea instructions and (b) that I got hardware for the various combinations and permutations of the line (Besta), not just for the item I ordered. So there were two different kinds of legs, two different sets of hardware for the shelves, etc., and I had to try them all to see what I preferred and what worked best.

It's easier (and more interesting) for me to discuss abstract concepts like the nature of the universe and of what we call "god" than it is for me to put hinges and soft-closing door doodads together.

But even worse was trying to get everything transferred over from the coffee table I was using to the new TV bench.

Folks, there's a reason that the instructions for the bench tell you (via the crappy drawings) to put your devices on the shelves before you put the back and the top of the unit on. I found that out the hard way and had to take both off. Then I had to fudge things. The pic above is the beginning process, not quite the end result.

BTW, it helps to download the PDFs from the Ikea web site and enlarge them to 600%. Just saying.

Anyway, it's done, the little tree is moved to the other corner now, and all is cleaned up. The new bench is regular table height, so seems quite tall to me. The pic I have on the wall above it will either have to move up or move altogether. I'll figure that out some other time. Everything is in Christmas upheaval now and I'm not worrying about the finer details.

Now I'm waiting to order an Ikea desk/console, and that should be the final purchase for a long time to come. (Unless I find a new area rug for the living room and have the money saved to buy it.)

Okay, I need some Ibuprofen and a full-body massage.

Peace.

You are an IKEA goddess! Goodness gracious, I wouldn't even attempt to put something like that together. It looks very nice Kim and the boys seem to like it. Your living room must look smashing! Can't wait to see it!

Thanks, but the living room does NOT look smashing. LOL. More like utter chaos and Christmas/winter clutter!

Now, if I were good at "DIY," I could do an Ikea hack and turn that plain TV bench into something spectacular! Any volunteers? ;-)

Good job! I wouldn't be close to as successful at it as you.

"It's easier...to discuss abstract concepts like the nature of the universe and of what we call "god" than it is for me to put hinges and soft-closing door doodads together."

You're not alone; it's why universities have doctorates of philosophy and not doctorates of practicality.

I bow to the IKEA Goddess! YOU are amazing!! And I hope the ibuprofen helped!
We are very impressed! Of course, you had such wonderful help!

Well done! I'm so grateful that my son has worked in retail outlets and learned to put those sorts of things together. 7 hours...that would have put me over the edge.

Hope you get your massage! Thanks too for the reminder that I need to relax and let go.

Ha! That's pretty much true, isn't it?

Actually, I didn't get around to taking the Ibuprofen! A hot shower and early to bed seemed to do it. I'm a bit stiff today, but nothing untoward, in spite of all the hours spent crouching on the floor.

Obviously it couldn't have been done without Nicki's supervision!

A hot shower in lieu of a massage. :-)

Can I hire your son for the next time?

Looks great! You are really quite handy...I'm sure the boys helped as well.

I'm very impressed! I have never put anything together like that by myself before and not sure I could. You're very resourceful! Your snoopervisors are adorable too!

Nicki was a great help. Derry took himself off out of the danger zone. LOL.

Well, it's not because I have a burning desire to have flat-pack furniture that needs assembly. LOL. It takes patience, something I often lack. :-D

Oh. My. Gosh. I never, ever want anything from Ikea ever again. I've seen horror shows (YouTube videos) on assembly and they really put me off. Seeing what you went though cements it for me. However, huge props to you!! I am truly impressed.

Man. NEVER could nor would I ever do that herculean task. I truly admire you a million percent!

Yikes! It's probably a good thing I've never seen a YouTube video about putting Ikea furniture together. LOL. It's not THAT bad....
Kea said…
You'd do it if you had to, or were sufficiently motivated, Carole. LOL. Trust me, if I could afford solid wood furniture, I wouldn't be doing this!
I've always been in awe about your ability to put together furniture =) I'm not especially gifted in that area!
The boys are looking fine.

If I could DIY, I could take a solid piece found cheap and do something amazing with it. Alas, that's beyond my abilities. This is the best I can do!
