Winding down the week, and the staycation
It's our Thanksgiving weekend in Canada, with the holiday being on Monday. I'll be back to work on Tuesday, and it never ceases to amaze me how quickly staycations/vacations pass. I wish I had enough vacation time to take another week; I'm not ready to return to my coworkers, to the politics and bs, etc.
Anyway, I've been enjoying the staycation, with the highlight being the two days I spent with friends Robin and Chuck (mostly Robin, because Chuck was working). She and I enjoy a lot of the same things--I've told her there are only two people I enjoy taking pictures with: her and Dad. We go at the same pace and like to explore, and in the case of Robin, we like to take pics of the same things. That's rare to find!

I got there early Tuesday morning, and our first stop was Reid's Dairy in Belleville. This is the spot that normally has two adorable goats and lots of geese, duck, and turtles. This time it was evident that the goats hadn't been there in a long time (overgrown grass), and there were only three ducks. I don't know what happened, but it was disappointing.
Who's the most handsome duck ever?
We spied one turtle.
And we also spied a kingfisher! I was at full zoom with the Fuji, so this was the best I could get, and it's highly cropped. But that's the first time in my life I've seen a kingfisher in "real" life, not on TV.
Robin did a lot of driving over the two days, and this was a typical sight, below.
This is Snowball, below. Robin and Chuck suspect she's been abandoned. Apparently a nearby household recently moved out and they think "Snowball" might have been left behind. She's a beautiful girl, but thin now. Robin and Chuck have done up signs to post around the area, and they will take her to a local rescue before winter if no one comes forward to claim her. She's accustomed to being an indoor cat, or so it seems. If she has no health issues, I would imagine she would find a home fairly quickly.
And this is Ralph, below. He does have a home, but since all the cats know where to go for food and treats, he comes to demand his fair share.
Since it was a beautiful day, we took a picnic lunch and stopped to eat outdoors at this historical site--Haldimand Baptist Church (replica, I believe, of the original old church that was destroyed in a fire). There was a covered patio area to sit and eat, and behind the church was someone's farm.
Poultry -- they all huddled away from the crazy middle-aged ladies with the cameras.
There was a handsome rooster and a couple of hens running around loose. The rooster kept a close eye on his "girls".
We headed into Cobourg and to the Northumberland & District Humane Society thrift store to see Louie, their resident cat. Everyone goes to see Louie. :-)
Robin found a cute "Louie" sweater--one with a black and white cat face just like Louie's, complete with pink nose. What was funny was that the two volunteers there didn't even realize the sweater was in the store!
On the way back we stopped at Rutherford's Farm Market (the place with the llamas). I snapped a couple of pics of the chickens, but didn't get one of the llamas this time (we didn't go over). I did get some yummy fresh apples and some raw honey.
Our last stop before having to pick Chuck up after work was Wicklow Beach. We'd been there in July too, it's a lovely spot. There were a couple of people walking in the distance, but otherwise we had the place to ourselves.
A monarch with shredded wings spied Robin and went straight to her, didn't want to leave her. Eventually she was able to put him down and we both hoped he didn't suffer long. I think Robin must be an angel of mercy on this earth.
A few final pics for this post: Miss Kitty, who also is homeless, Ralph again (later), who was very perturbed that Miss Kitty was inside the house at that point and getting extra treats, and of the almost-full moon.
I'll do Wednesday's pics in one or two separate posts -- I snapped a lot of shots! We drove all over the region, exploring an old abandoned cheese factory and barn, among other things. I even got to take a few pics in a pumpkin patch at a different farm market. (Maggie, I hope you've gotten to visit your pumpkin patch!)
Peace.

It was such a whirlwind, wonderful two days. I enjoyed every minute of it. Looking forward to your Spring visit!
Take care.
Robin
RE: cropping you out of the sweater pic: Only because I'd never post a pic of you without asking you first.
And what, I can't come back till Spring? Gees, and here I did dishes and everything.... :-P
Poor Miss Snowball. I'm glad that Robin and Chuck are helping her. ( I want to just hug the tiny little girl.)
Having that beach all to yourself sounds amazing. I've been wanting to go to a deserted beach for years. Perhaps I should put that on my next staycation list.
I have not been to a pumpkin patch yet but I am planning for one in the area. Keep your toes crossed for me :)
It's always fun spending time with Robin and Chuck. They live in small town surrounded by a wonderful rural landscape, and there's so much history, so much to see and do. (Of course there is here too, but having access to a vehicle certainly makes a huge difference.)
BTW, Snowball might look tiny in the pic, but she's BIG. She's a big-boned girl, Robin says she's a Maine Coon (or perhaps part Maine Coon), so that gives you an idea of her size. She's underweight, she needs a *good* forever home.
Sounds like you had a wonderful staycation - it's unfortunate it can't be longer. Hopefully Snowball, and Miss Kitty are able to find homes soon. Your friends are terrific to feed and care for them in the meantime.
Thanks for stopping by!
Robin and I not only go at the same pace, but we like the same things. Dad doesn't have an interest in taking pics of flora or fauna, he's more landscape and people. I get flora, fauna and landscapes with Robin! :-)
Miss Kitty has been on her own for several years, I believe, and comes and goes at whim. (Good thing she's spayed, so she was "owned" at one point.) Snowball is the bigger concern right now, but I know Robin and Chuck will take good care of her.
Your photos are terrific, Kim. I, of course, like all the animal ones, and the beach shots are wonderful.
How did Nicki and Derry do with their new pet sitter?
Enjoy the rest of your time off. :)
That top pic is awesome! The countryside is so beautiful. Looks like there is much to explore. I sure hope the kitties, especially Snowball, will get good homes. It's so nice that they are feeding them.
Everything was fine when I came home, except that she had left a small tin of food out in Nicki's spot. Half the tin, not even on a plate (I have plenty of cat dishes). I couldn't fathom that -- why didn't she put it on a plate? Bizarre. It's not like the boys could eat out of that little tin. Oh for someone with common sense. I so miss the first pet sitter we had.
There's TONS to explore and never enough time, since normally I go for only one night. I miss our first pet sitter -- at least I trusted her with the boys as much as I would trust anyone. She had common sense and a wonderful, gentle way about her.
I hope Snowball will find a good home too. Fingers (and paws) crossed for her!
I'm very limited by not having my own vehicle, that point is driven home (no pun intended) every time I go. There's tons to do in my area too, but I can't get to any of it. So it's great to be able to run the roads with Robin when I go down.
I would love going to the lake shore the most. There's something about a large body of water. It's like the shore is a beginning and an ending in one.
I'm sorry your holiday is almost over. That is a discouraging feeling, having to go back to work. Not being there can be so relaxing. Even if the days are filled with chores, they are much more exhilarating than work-days. Only eight more months until my own holidays...
"Only eight more months" ... not that you're counting! :-)
and it's like it never even happened ~~~~~ ???
hope all went well with the new cat sitter and the doodz didn't give her too much grief !! :) ♥♥
I won't mention to the crew about all the B werds...in this post !! :)
The boys survived. The pet sitter did one bizarre, illogical thing (left open the 85 gram of cat food on the floor where Nicki eats, without putting it on a plate--needless to say, the boys couldn't eat it), and I had to text her Tuesday night when I had asked her to please text me, but otherwise all was okay. I think she was better than pet sitter #2 anyway, in spite of those two things. At least she did Nicki's meds properly (I have to assume) and followed instructions.
