A Chip Off the Old Block
Chip, one of the resident cats at our vet clinic. (See my August 2017 post with previous pics of and info about him.)
Chip was hanging out, obviously not stressed by the comings and goings, though he definitely didn't appreciate the 3-month old puppy that was allowed to annoy him. (Chip swatted at him, justifiably so. The pup's human "mother" just thought it was all funny, that it would teach her dog a lesson. Yeah, whatever, lady.)
Anyway, Nicki survived the ordeal of being in the carrier for just over an hour all told (taxis were hard to come by yesterday and it was a long wait to get home), and though he wouldn't admit it, I think he feels better for having had his anal glands expressed. (They were quite filled up.)
Chip weighs in at 8 kg, 17.6 pounds. He's a big boy!
I picked up some senior food, Royal Canin paté, to see if the boys will eat it. (They already do eat some RC Adult Instinctive that I get from the local pet stores.) I'd like to get them off the Fancy Feast (or at least reduce it considerably) if possible, and get them onto something a bit better for their age. I take issue with corn-filled food for obligate carnivores, but this doesn't have any, which was a nice surprise. Maybe pet food companies are starting to get the message from consumers. Anyway, I bought only a few cans, as we all know how picky cats are. I'm lucky with Nicki, he'll eat a wider variety of canned food than will Derry, who is very finicky and such a kibble head. I'm concerned about his (Derry's) kidneys as he ages, though, and I know Fancy Feast is high in phosphorous, a no-no for cats with kidney problems. Derry's not at that stage yet, as far as I know (July's blood work was good), but his values have been creeping up incrementally over the past couple of years.
But not even the best, most appropriate food will do the cat any good if s/he won't eat it! So I'll see if they like this, and IF so (big if, to eat it more than once or twice), I'll buy a few more cans. It's not any more expensive than a lot of the food I already buy for them, barring the Fancy Feast.
What a sookie face!
Just one thing...While I was there, a woman came in and said to the staff that she had "Beau" with her (again). A short time later a man came in carrying a large dog in his arms, the dog wrapped up in a blanket, his hind legs hanging out. To me, the poor dog seemed to be completely unresponsive, possibly unconscious. I don't know what was (is) wrong, but I wanted to cry, seeing him. I so hope he'll be okay, and if that's not to be, that he isn't suffering.
So give your fur babies scritches and cuddles, while you can.
Peace.
