Subtle Clues

The clues are very subtle, but I think some kitty, who shall remain nameless...
Derry outside in the back garden
...has been hanging out where he's technically not supposed to. (The dining table.)
Derry's cat hair all over the dining table
I don't know...Does my theory hold water?  :-)

It's a long weekend here in Ontario, and in many other provinces as well -- here, Monday is "Family Day", though it goes by other names. So I get an extra day off to pretend I'm actually going to tackle a few projects I've had on my "to do" list for months (or longer).

In actuality, other than the usual errands, grocery shopping and house chores, I'll more likely be glued to Olympic coverage and maybe even napping. I enjoy watching the winter sports more than the summer ones, love all the skiing, snowboarding, aerial events, etc. and the various speed skating events. Alas, even though I'm Canadian, I don't like watching hockey, even at the Olympic level. I hope Canada does well, both the women and the men, but am not and won't be watching those games.

As for other things, in no particular order...

It's been a hard winter for Nicki's asthma: he had 3 attacks in December, 3 in January, and 2 already in February. I hope that as the temperatures start to moderate this stops. Normally he'll go 2 or 3 months in between attacks, so I'm a bit discouraged at the moment, considering he gets 4 doses of Flovent a day (2 in the AM and 2 in the PM) at 12 breaths a dose.

I'm hearing the mourning doves cooing in the early mornings now, as I leave for work. We even had one visit the fence a short time ago, for some minutes. The boys were transfixed, of course.

We're inching toward Spring! In fact, we're bracing for heavy rain and possible flooding on Tuesday and Wednesday, but it would be nice to get rid of (at least in part) the dirty, crusty snowbanks. I'm ready, I have a new large umbrella and already have rubber boots!  :-)

As for the upcoming Spring, I've booked a short trip to Halifax in early June, to visit Mom. Airfares already are selling out fast, flying out of our small city, but I just don't want to fuss with trying to take either the train or bus to Toronto, then get to Pearson Airport, navigate my way around, etc. Or worse, have to stay overnight in a hotel. That would cancel out any cost-savings I might get by flying out of Toronto directly, and would mean I'd be away from the boys even longer, which I just can't bear to do. I'll be gone 5 days as it is. No doubt I'll be bawling (in fear) during all the flights...as usual. I'll book a pet sitter closer to the actual travel date, already am wondering if I'll have to "train" a fourth sitter (it's not a job that you can earn a living wage at, it seems, so turnover tends to be high). Anyway, I'll worry about that in a few months!

That's about it. If you're also having a long weekend, I hope you enjoy the extra day off and will do something enjoyable. Leave any chores for another time, the dirt still will be there (sadly -- lol).

I'll leave you with two quotes/graphics from TinyBuddha.com:

Kim, I think your nameless kitty is probably very guilty... at least it was 'hairs' on the table and not upchuck. Question: PBS has a show called "Last Tango in Halifax"... any kin to your Halifax? Enjoy your long weekend!

Ah yes, the tell-tale hairs. :) It's a three-day weekend here too for President's Day, but my company doesn't give it to us (we had MLK Day and Veteran's Day off last month, though). I'm really sorry to hear about Nicki's frequent asthma attacks. Like you, I hope they'll abate once it warms up. I really like your pictures of the dove.

Enjoy your day off tomorrow!

We don’t watch hockey anymore, Olympic or NHL. I’m from the pre expansion day of 6 teams and even went to school or knew some of the famous hockey players of that day. Spring is certainly in the air and I hope the upcoming rain washes away the dirty piles at the edge of our lawn. Enjoy the extra day off work.

I think you may actually have a case going against nameless kitty. I hope he engages the best Catattorney, namely me. I will defend him to the max!
I love Mourning Doves. One of my favorites. And have an uneventful good trip to see your Mother. I had a seat mate once, a young woman maybe 20 who was very frightened on the plane. We were all headed to New Orleans on that plane I hope I was a comfort.

I've heard of the British show, never seen it. I don't think there's any relation to Halifax, Nova Scotia, though.

As for the weekend, I passed on finishing the house chores and went off to the City greenhouse this afternoon. It opens for 5 consecutive Sundays through February and March, so the public can get a taste of spring. I've gone most years for the past decade, take essentially the same snapshots every year, but I still love it. :-)

Two holidays in one month for you? Plus New Year's Day, I would presume. I won't feel sorry for you, then, that you're not getting President's Day. LOL.
Kea said…
That's pretty cool, Linda, that you went to school with and/or knew some of the hockey players of the day. I remember collecting hockey cards in the gum (?) packages, and trading them. Bobby Orr was big at the time. :-)

Hmm, Katie, I might not let nameless Kitty know you're willing to defend him! :-D

The trip to see Mom isn't for a few months, so I have a long time to work myself up into a lather about the flying. I think I'm on the same flights (time of day) that I was on back in November.

I'm sure you were a comfort to that young woman...I've been on the receiving end of great kindness from strangers on the flight east back in 2015 and those women certainly helped me get through it.

I'm so sorry to hear Nicki's been having more frequent asthma attacks, and do hope it's just related to the severe winter weather and dry air. As for the hairs on the table, Gracie and Ava opine that perhaps the hairs just blew up there... ;)

Poor Nicki. That must be very hard on him, and I would be discouraged as well. I hope the approaching spring brings him relief.

As for the hairs on the dining table, I'm sure they drifted there from somewhere else over time. That's what my cats tell me, anyway...

I think on these extra days off you should ignore the chores and instead plan to do something nice for yourself. Tomorrow I have taken leave and if the weather is ok I will go to see a movie, although we are due a storm so may just put my feet up and watch a movie at home.

Is it warming up for you now? it is getting darker here now and cooling slightly.
Kea said…
Well, Gracie and Ava could be right. It's within the realm of possibility. Though perhaps not probability. :-)
Kea said…
I'm sure you cats must be correct about the cat hairs drifting. :-)

As for Nicki, I always hover on the edge of supplementing with Prednisolone. I know there's another inhaled med that contains a bronchodialtor as well as the steroid, but it's a last-ditch thing (unless there's something new on the market now). Bronchodialators tend to make cats restless and/or spacey, so it's not really a route I want to travel down. I did try him with an inhaled bronchodialtor a few years ago, when we first started the Flovent, but I couldn't get him to take more than a few breaths, the "taste" of it must be pretty bad. (I recall another blogger leaving a comment to that effect as well.)

Well, I ignored the chores yesterday and took myself off to the City greenhouse for its open house, so I do have a few things to finish up today anyway. Besides, we're expecting heavy rain later, so things will be messy outside. (Temps are up and down, minus whatever into a few degrees on the plus side Celsius. Typical for this time of year.)

I hope you enjoy your day off, no matter what you do!

Oh Dear Nicki, I am so sorry to learn his asthma attacks are up. I know it's hard on you too Kim. We've headed right into Spring -- our Spring. It's already 80+ degrees and humidity and mosquitoes are up. But the sun is staying out longer each evening so I can sit on the catio with the purries later. Glad to hear you'll get to visit your Mom, hope she is doing well.
Kea said…
I could head into spring now. Actually, I was ready for spring in December! But not 80+ F, thanks, you can keep that. Enjoy sitting out on the catio!
ugh I am so sorry to hear that Nicki has been having a rough time with his asthma. I have been watching The Olympics virtually every day.......skating is my favorite. Kudos to Canada for doing so well , the U.S. is just awful this time around. Worst that I remember!

I concur that you might have a guilty kitty on your hands, er, table. Sending positive vibes to Nicki that his asthma will stabilize soon. It is President's Day here in the States, but I don't have the day off. I too am loving the Olympics and staying up too late at night watching them! I found out there is a curling club in my town, so I think I'll check it out.
Kea said…
I think the US puts more funding into the summer games, though. Or I'm guessing. Norway and Germany are cleaning up, it's great to watch the various events!
Kea said…
I don't get curling. Well, I saw some the mixed doubles and that was more interesting, but I don't understand the scoring, so can't really appreciate it. Regular curling seems like a snooze fest to me, on par (no pun intended!) with watching golf. With absolutely no offense intended to those who really enjoy both!

Hi Kim, so sorry that Nicki has been having a hard time this winter. Hopefully the warmer weather brings him some relief.
I know what kind of weekend you had. Are you sore this morning?
Your Mom will be so happy to see you. I understand fully not wanting to fly!
I hear about the Olympics on the radio but have watched none of it. My Mum was a great curler back in the 1970’s so I do understand about it a bit.
What is it, a month today until Spring? I’m counting the days!

Hi Robin. I called my vet clinic to ask the best way to touch base with the vet and she said email him, so I have. Nicki had another asthma attack last evening, unfortunately. That's 6 now since January 21st. So I'll see what the vet suggests. This has been the absolute worst winter for my own allergies and respiratory problems, so it's not really a surprise that Nicki's have problems have been flaring up.

I'm not as sore as I was expecting! A bit in the upper leg/hip area, but that's all.

There are too many days till spring. LOL. I'll just go look at the greenhouse pics again. :-)
nicki....sorree dood....we noe itz ruff for ewe N mom N we hope de bass terd a tax take a hike N leeve ya a lone ~~~~~~~~ N wavez two ewe name lezz :) hope ya both haza grate day ~ :) ♥♥

Hi guys, thanks for stopping by. :-) I'd like his asthma to take a hike and not come back too. I emailed our vet to ask if he could suggest a course of action or whether I'm jumping the gun, so I just need to wait till I hear back (probably tomorrow). I'm okay with Pred for the short term, would hate to see Nicki on it long term, given how much Flovent he gets. It's probably all related to litter dust (even though the litter is supposed to be 99% dust-free...ha), other allergens, our climate...poor boy.

Anyway, I hope you're all doing well! :-)
Some kitty is most likely guilty :)
A trip to NS sounds lovely. It's such a beautiful province. I don't blame you for not liking the flights.
I hope Nicki's asthma symptoms decrease. I sometimes wonder if melting snow doesn't lead to latent pollen and mold?
Hope you had a great long weekend!
Enjoy your trip. My cousins have been traveling all over the world house & pet sitting. They have stayed in some really lovely places and had lots of wonderful experiences. I can't remember the name of the website they go through. My other cousin has used it for a pet sitter when they were gone.
Kea said…
Melting snow does, though I find Nicki's asthma tends to be worse in the cold, dry months.

If the vet can compound a bronchodilator into a chicken-flavoured liquid, I would consider adding that in for emerg uses (not to replace the Flovent).

How is Emily doing?

What a fabulous way to travel and get to know people, see so much of the world! I remember several years ago, listening to an interview with an elderly Australian lady, who sold or stored all her belongings and did just that -- travelled the world house-sitting for people. Yes, there IS a web site (probably more than one), but I can't recall what it was. Great idea! Though perhaps not for special needs pets -- I prefer to have someone local in my case.
