Synchronized Swimming

Goose synchronized swimming

Two weekends ago I had spied a pair of swans nesting in some reeds off a major thoroughfare, then saw them again yesterday when I was on the bus, headed to an appointment. So I donned my thermal layers (minus 14 C windchill!) and walked over this morning, to get a few snapshots.

This is the view, below, before zooming in. The swans are tiny white specs on a little spit of land in the middle of the image.
At full zoom
There were lots of geese around too (hence the first pic of the pair feeding, who were much closer to me), and even a pair of nesting geese with the swans, which I didn't see until I got home and downloaded the pics. I think you'd have to look at them at full size to see the geese on the left.
In fact, there were three geese, the male, the female who stayed on the nest, and another with them (last year's child?) too. All but the female goose took to the water when I moved down to the water's edge, even though I was so far away. The pic below is blurry--I couldn't do any better at that distance--but you can just make out both swans in the water, the two geese with them, possibly a duck or maybe a rock (lol), and the remaining goose on the land.
Blurry pics and all, it still was worth almost getting frostbite on my hands for them. :-)

Yesterday I managed a close up of a robin in the tree behind our fence, from an upstairs window. It still was early in the morning, so not that light, and I couldn't quite see what I was getting. I cut off his tail, unfortunately...though luckily for him, that's only in the snapshot! This pic, too, is a bit blurry, but it was the best of the few I managed to snap before he flew off.
Below is Willard, my stylist's adopted cat. Unfortunately they lost their senior dog, Wiley, to a brain tumour. He was diagnosed just after my previous visit and managed an extra month of life with meds, but that was all, sadly. However, Willard seems to be filling the void and has settled in nicely. He had just been adopted when I last was there, and he wouldn't come near me. Yesterday he came right away to greet me, though he was cautious of the camera when I pulled it out. I finally put it on the floor and let him sniff it, play with the cord.
What a cutie.  :-)

Also cute, these two, this afternoon:
I hope everyone's had a good weekend. It'll be a short work week ahead, with Good Friday on the horizon. We don't have Easter Monday off, but I'm looking forward to the three days all the same.

Peace.

You are certainly brave, Kim, going out in the cold to get some shots of the beautiful swans. I'm glad we could all enjoy them vicariously through your great photos. And that pretty robin, too!

I am sorry to hear of Wiley's passing, but happy that Willard is bringing your stylist some love and joy and comfort. Willard is very cute, and so are Nicki and Derry, of course.

Enjoy your short week!

I'm sorry, but I laughed when I read that you saw the swans "again yesterday on the bus, headed to an appointment." I wondered where on Earth swans could be going on a bus.

But seriously, folks... The geese and the swans look like they are all right living beside each other. I thought they might have been combative, different species being close to each other's nest. Obviously, they are fine. I hope everything goes all right when the young ones hatch.
That first photo of the synchronized swimming behinds made me smile. (and it's 4:30 am!)
A nice jaunt out for you (though chilly...brrr)
Willard is adorable.
I love the robin photo.
Ear scritches to your comfy and cozy boys =)

My stylist told me that her 6-year old son said he likes cats better than dogs. Go figure! Probably because Wiley was a senior fellow and not interested in playing.

I hope your work week is short too!

Ha! That will teach me to post in the evening, when I'm tired. :-) I've changed that terrible sentence to be clear. LOL.

The swans and the geese seem to be fine together. Actually, there recently was a swan that had lost its mate and it had bonded with a goose. I can't remember if I saw that as a new item somewhere or read it on mnn.com. That surprised me!

What on earth were you doing up at 4:30?! I'm up at 4:30 every morning, but I don't think most people are!

I hope you have a good week and that you get at least three days off for the Easter holiday. (We work Monday, not a day off for us.)

Great photos. Love seeing all the birds around your area. I second the comments above that you are brave to head out in the cold!

The trouble with living in a cold climate for much of the year is that if you don't "brave" it, you sit at home. I did that the previous Sunday, was too wussy to go out into the bitter wind. LOL.

It's hard to get decent critter snapshots...For some reason, none of them seems to want to stay still and pose long enough for me to choose a camera setting and compose the shot before pressing the button! :-D

Hmm, come to think of it, Nicki was having very active dreams yesterday afternoon! I was sitting beside and he was deep in REM sleep about something crazy. Maybe birds! :-D

The geese made me giggle! The swans are beautiful! I haven't seen any around here. So sorry to hear about Wiley but glad that Willard is helping to bring smiles again. Speaking of smiles, Nicki is smiling upside down!

Love the photos Kim! Grateful that spring is coming to your part of the world, though -14C windchill is still a bit too much for this time of year.

Willard is a handsome boy! It must have been tough for Wiley's family but it is good to hear that Willard is helping them through their grief.

Have a good work week!

Those two bums are quite cute! You took some great pictures. I can imagine how cold it was. I love the one of the robin.

Willard sure looks like a cutie. It is very sad about Wiley. I know they must be very sad, but how nice that they adopted Willard!

Seeing Nicki and Derry snuggled up definitely brings a smile!

I wish I could have seen that sentence that John pointed out. I could have very well used the smile. It was a sweet little mistake, Kim. The swan and grease pictures are so welcome. And I love seeing so many of them. Maybe you will catch the mom swans with babies soon. The Robin...oh what a glorious chubby looking (but not chubby at all..he's cold and fluffed) small bit of perfection. And Willard...keep your new mom smiling with your loving presence. Boys! You look scrumptious lying there. *smooch*

I left out the "when I was", which then read that I saw the swans ON the bus, while THEY were headed out to an appointment. :-D

What is it about fowl butts? LOL. I don't know, but ducks and geese are irresistible to me at any time, and when they're butt-up feeding, even more so. :-)

Spring is somewhere! There are hints of her, of course, with the few crocuses and snowdrops, but oh, winter has long outstayed his welcome.

Have a great rest-of-week and a very Happy Easter!

Seeing a bird butt up always makes me smile for some reason. Cute, I guess. Their butts are cuter than ours, anyway. :-P

Amazing pictures. Wow. You are really good. Thanks for sharing!

Chloe Jo is having a hard time, as am I. This post is great for its soothing photos. I needed that. Hugs.
