"Fair to Middlin"

I haven't been blogging much lately because there's not much to write about. Things are "fair to middlin," as the expression goes. Not fantastic, not bad.

I've had to give up (at least for now) on all the "high end" canned cat food I've been feeding the boys, the stuff that's "supposed" to be so great for them...you know, the species-appropriate diet. I just couldn't get a handle on their awful output, so in desperation I bought some vet prescription Royal Canin fibre canned. Lots of rice and cellulose to bulk the boys up. It's been helping a great deal over the past 9 days, especially for Derry. Nicki, who needs more fibre than Derry, seems to prefer the Hill's Z/D (also prescription) dry, though he'll eat some of the RC canned as well. So his diet and output still need some tweaking.

I don't think I'll be able to manage the cost of canned vet food on an ongoing basis (the dry is fine, but the RC is about $4 per can, with taxes). I've taken a look at the Royal Canin retail options and there are a couple of canned choices that I could live with, if they work for the boys.

But right now I'll continue with the canned fibre.

It's very difficult for me to toss out 18 years of reading and research into what obligate carnivores should be eating, knowing what should work for them...but doesn't.

I'll probably end up donating most of the food I have on hand, which is unfortunate since I just recently had stock-piled cans of Merrick and Instinct, while they were on sale.

On another subject entirely, has anyone ever bought a mattress from an online retailer and if so, are you satisfied?

I've been lurking around The Mattress Underground (TMU) since May, researching mattresses. OMC, I now know too much and have analysis paralysis! I keep waffling over what type of mattress to purchase (memory foam or hybrid), whether in-store or online, and then of course what brand. I actually have an Excel spreadsheet of mattress layer density specs for 12 different mattresses. My issue is that while I fall into what's considered the "average" weight category, my BMI is high. (Translation: I'm short and fat.) So I need high density memory foam in an all-foam bed, or high density memory foam layers in a hybrid, and no company out there (that is either available in Canada or ships to Canada) offers more than 4 lb per cubic foot, which is medium quality and not recommended for people with a high BMI. (Note: Some mattress web sites have outdated specs listed, i.e. densities that are not current, as I found out from contacting the companies directly.)

Okay, there IS one Canadian foam mattress company that does offer good quality, high density foam mattresses (latex too), BUT they don't have "white glove" delivery service in my area and they do NOT accept returns. Huh. I'm not buying a mattress, either from a store or from an online retailer, that I can't return. That's absurd, IMO, especially when you're online shopping.

Anyway, if anyone out there with a high BMI is reading this and has had good luck with mattress durability, let me know. I currently have a 5.5 year old firm Kingsdown, and I've recently added a 2-inch memory foam topper to it, because it KILLS my hips and shoulders, it's so firm. It was a bit too firm for me when I bought it; my fault, because I mistakenly equated firmness with support and durability and of course those things are not the same at all.

BTW, two take-aways I've gotten from all my reading: 1. Mattresses really aren't designed to provide proper support (especially for heavier people) for more than 5 - 7 years, if that. Unless you're buying latex, which costs an arm and a leg and weighs a ton. Nothing is made the way it used to be! 2. Don't buy a mattress from any company that won't disclose its specs (i.e. what the layers are made of, their densities in pounds per cubic foot, indentation force/load deflection, etc.).

I'll leave you with a cute Pinterest graphic that showed up in my feed the other day; you might already have seen it.  :-)

Peace.

I think that the mattress manufacturers keep us ALL in the dark so we don't understand what it is we are getting. Like so many things when they 'fancy' up the language so you can interpret it or they make finding it so gosh darn difficult. Glad to see your post!

I'm very glad to see your post and my BMI ain't nothing to shot and dance over, trust me. I too bought a "firm" mattress which totally killed my hops and back and shoulders. It was like sleeping on a buckboard. I too thought it would be good for me. It was not. Finally I bought a latex memory foam topper. It was like going to heaven. However, after a couple of years, it dried out, turned yellow and ewwww. I hurt in my back from it too after a couple years. Bought another. A 3 inch one on- line from that big on-line company..I suddenly can't remember its name--very well known......it shipped free. I had to get the boys in the help me get it on the bed. THAT lasted a couple of years and my back started hurting as it developed subtle indentations. This time I got one a year ago from Costco..not bad..but I know what's coming.

The boys look preciously sweet. I am so sorry about the foods. But you are surely doing the right thing. It's just not working for their systems...the other stuff.

I wonder if you couldn't sell the cat food on a local buy and sell website. It's a shame to have to simply donate it (unless you can get a charitable receipt.)

As for the mattress, I bought mine at the Brick when I bought this house - 9 years ago. I too, am short and fat, and I've noticed the bed is starting to sink where I sleep most. It's a pillow top so I can't turn it over (like we used to do when I was a kid). I've never bought a mattress on-line and had no idea there was so much to it!

Good luck with both issues!

Mattresses are so hard to buy. We actually took books and went and laid on the mattresses we were interested in for about 30 minutes each. MOL. The sales people though we were daft, but we ended up with a mattress that works pretty well. I am sorry to hear about Nicki and Derry's continued food woes, but it sounds like you're all making some small strides. Paws and fingers crossed that continues. Hugs to you all!

Thanks for stopping by; I hope your back is much better!

I never thought about latex drying out. I wonder if that happens to latex mattresses too. They're touted as supposedly so good, and so long-lasting.

I'd rather donate the food than go to the hassle of trying to sell it. Plus the cases are opened and partially used, or the cans were purchased 12 at a time or 12 per flavour, so not in cases at all. Not easy to sell, but easy enough to box up and donate.

Huh, good luck with your next mattress, whenever you decided to splurge on a new one. The same issues apply when buying in-store, and btw, the big mattress manufacturers tend to user lower quality materials and NOT disclose any information on how their products are made (i.e. the densities, IFD/ILD, etc.)

We're limited here in mattress options, just Sleep Country and Mattress Mart and the big box appliance/furniture stores. Really nothing of good, lasting quality at all. I guess if you go into it knowing the mattress will support you properly for only 5 years max, then you can buy whatever fits your budget and just replace it in a handful of years. Seems wasteful, though.

I'm so tired of trying to do the right thing for them, Carole....

I mean tired as in exhausted from it all, not tired of taking care of them, if you know what I mean!

Love the pic of the boys playing in the plastic bin! As for mattresses - can't help you there. Ours is probably 30 years old... and should be upgraded. But it's not a priority... since we need a new roof and probably some foundation work. I have friends and relatives that have the kind that either firms or softens according to your specifications and also raise and lower your head. They seem to love it. We are fine with our old, firm, but pillowtop mattress.

I wouldn't throw out all your tinned cat-food. I have found that unless it's a variety that was untried before and unliked now, the cats will likely return to it, or try it at some point. As for what works for the boys, perhaps go low-end until you find something that works, then make your way up the quality chart again, slowly; finding the lowest common denominator, so to speak.

And on the subject of mattresses, I suppoose I should get a new one; my current one counts as an antique. Could it have sentimental value? It's an heirloom... Another something to buy when I win the lottery.
