Well, THAT was freaky!
So last evening, around 6:45 PM, I heard my screen door open (I stopped locking it some months ago, though I used to keep it locked when home). I expected a knock on the door, but the next thing I knew, I heard someone fumbling at my door. Then I heard and saw the deadbolt turn, unlocking the top lock. More fumbling, someone trying to open the door knob lock.
I'm sure you can imagine the kinds of thoughts racing through my mind at this point. Only a couple of people have keys to my house, and only my current pet sitter would be using them.

I went to the door while the person was still fumbling, trying to get the other lock open, and I hauled open the door, expecting to see L and wondering why on earth she would be entering my house for some completely unknown reason.
Uh, no, it was a strange man with a key ring full of keys in his hand.
Turned out that it was the pet sitter's boyfriend, thinking he was at "Pat and Tulip's" house (obviously other clients) and coming to take care of Tulip because L had to be admitted to ICU. (She has Type 1 Diabetes and has another bad infection; this must just have happened.)
He was freaked out, I was freaked out, Derry was freaked out! We all were freaked out!
He apologized profusely, said he'd have to call L and get the correct address. She had mentioned the nearby major thoroughfare that our complex is adjacent to, and that had stuck in his mind, as he had driven her to my house before (probably in October, when I was away).
After he left I sent a text to L, saying that her bf had just shown up thinking we were Pat and Tulip, that he said she was in ICU, that I was thinking of her and hoping she'd be okay, be able to be released soon, etc. She sent me a text back right away, so embarrassed and deeply apologetic, said she had given her bf the address (of Pat and Tulip) but that he was very stressed about her being in the hospital. Absolutely understandable.
However, just to feel safe, I turned the lock on the screen door, so no one can open it from the outside...and I'll be doing that again from now on, thank you very much.
Peace.

Well, the good thing is that, since it occurred only because of a mix up among people whom you knew (well, not quite the boyfriend), it is unlikely to happen again, especially with anyone dangerous. But even so, it’s good to take precautions. How was he able to open the deadbolt lock?
some girl I've never met in my life...long story short when the "dood" got home he went to the
hardware store and got a deadbolt and installed it { even tho residents weren't supposed to...the
hell with that } and I kept it locked 24/7.....
25 years later and in a different city, I now am best friends with ADT !! ;) ♥♥
I hope the pet sitter is home and on her way to recovery !
Oh sure that was most scary!
Our cat sitter has the code so she does not need to fumble with keys.
We have to be very alert on our home protection and also for protecting our fur babies.
Happy to report that Barty boy seems to be on the mend; he's eating and doing everything he's supposed to be doing. Hope in a week time he will gain some of his weight back as his 9.2 lb really was too low. Can feel his bones near the end of his back...
December 5 we received the saddest tiding while living here those 36 years. Our BEST friend had passed away. He lost the battle to cancer... So St. Nicholas will forever have a different meaning to us.
Sending you hugs and hope you stay cozy!
