It's Friday January 15 as I type this and the roofers have just left. Yes, they were here! They actually did the back half of the roof, and supposedly will be back on Monday to do the front, unless it's too icy. (They weren't able to do the entire roof at once because it took too long for the frost to melt this morning.)

I was talking with one of the guys (not the foreman), and he was explaining that they had put a synthetic membrane down first (not done originally, or when they re-roofed about 15 years ago) and that the shingles now are a different type, will last longer. They don't slot together, they're all of a piece. So he assured me that the roof won't leak; at least the back half won't. (It hasn't anyway.) I told him that one of the issues has been a gap at the gable, allowing water into the master bedroom (front of the unit, over the garage), but he told me that they had wrapped the gable with the membrane and that it should be fine. (Fingers crossed, as we're going to get a messy rain/snow mix this weekend, with possibly quite a bit of rain.)

They did, however, damage one of the sheets that forms the pet-safe addition I have on the fence, and I pointed it out to him, said I have spare sheets in the garage and asked if they'd put a new one on when they're done because I don't have the tools to do so. He said they would, so we'll see. It's hard to tell in the pic above, but it's torn and just flapping/hanging on the far right; in addition, there's a hole centre left. It's from the snow and ice they were shovelling off the back of the roof before they re-shingled.
BTW, I was out in the back space picking up nails and bits of old shingles when I was chatting with the guy, and I completely forgot about social distancing. We weren't that close to each other, but not 6 feet apart, either. And after he saw that I was picking up the old nails by hand, he got their magnetic sweeper and had a go at picking them up too. That's a handy gadget! I'm sure I'll still find dozens of nails all the same, come springtime, after the snow has melted. Maybe I should check Amazon for one too!
Derry (pic above from last week, on the only day we had a bit of sunshine) coped with all the noise and chaos by squeezing himself underneath the couch. How he could do that, given his rotund, overweight little body, is mind-boggling to me. The gap between the floor and the couch is only about 3.5 inches!
Anyway, for the first time in 16 months and 11 days, I have a glimmer of hope that my leaky roof issues might, just might, be resolved before another 16 months pass.
Take care and stay well!

I'm laughing at the image of Derry squeezing himself under the couch. :)
Love the Derry photo here and also glad to read the update on your roof; finally it looks like it's going to get resolved.
We both feel like a rag... mostly having to lie down on bed. Nobody told us that the Covid shot would be hurtful and make you feel like that... Hoping for better days soon!
Did manage to drive 180 km this morning (going over it was raining...!) for my ophthalmologist. My 2nd surgery is on the 28th and looking forward to putting that all behind me.
Hugs,
