Derry went back to the vet clinic yesterday to have the old Freestyle Libre senor removed and a new one put on. I took a glucometer with me and had the tech do a glucose reading with it while the old sensor was on, so I could then scan the old sensor and see if the numbers were close.

Glucometer: 4.6
Old senor: 4.4

This means that yes, the senor has been working properly and giving accurate readings, which was a relief to me, as I have no desire to stress Derry (or myself) out by trying to prick his ears with a needle unless I absolutely have to.

The new sensor was applied to Derry's left side this time, and will be good for another 14 days.


I also had the vet tech take a blood sample and am having the serum fructosamine test re-run. Derry has had no insulin since early morning on October 15th and so far has been reading within normal levels. So a double-check of the fructosamine is in order, IMO. I should have the results on Monday.

You see, things don't look as grave as you were 'afraid of' they would.
Derry looks good and even with his shaved upper back and remember that however YOU feel, it also will reflect on Derry boy. Being anxious is not good for the optimum health feeling and a lot we can influence positively.
Think about kitties living out on the street that never have anyone checking on them... They might nog receive too much of wrong or bad food either...
Each coin has two sides.
But no doubt you will enter the weekend feeling a lot more relieved.
That first cartoon is a good one. The 1st mentioned ought to read: BED... Haha!
Kitties are right on target when it comes to that and we kitty moms have done quite some loads of kitty laundry or caused by kitties...😼
But that is called—LOVE and dedication!

What a relief for you to know both readings were so close in range. But, how they shaved Derry a big swath for a small device! I hope he is eating better and his eye problem is all gone by now. I'm not sure the universe can keep up with what we need when we need it, lol. But it is a good thought to practice on bad days. Hope you do get the better weather that we are starting to see here today. Maybe you can get out for a few walks or window shopping. Lynn and Precious

Lynn, the tech had shaved areas on both of Derry's shoulders to make it easier for me to administer insulin injections. Derry's fur is VERY dense, and I couldn't see any skin, so I had asked them to do it back in September, on his second visit.

I do keep in mind that Derry is almost 15.5 years old (in December). So there's only so much I'm willing to do/subject him to. Or myself, for that matter. I'm not going to make his last months or year(s) horrible with all kinds of vet procedures and poking and prodding, endlessly. I'll have to see how the next couple of weeks go re: his glucose readings and I'll decide then whether to have the vet tech apply a new sensor for another two weeks or just remove this second one when it's done.

Of all my cats, Derry has lived the longest, had the most attention (simply because I work from home), has been spoiled the most. He's had a good life with me.

And yes, I do feel more relieved knowing the sensors are doing what they are supposed to!

I agree, it is good to know that the senors is accurate. I wonder if something wonky caused that first reading? We hope the blood work yields better results this time.

They shaved quite a bit of Derry for the small dial. Ah, I just read your answer to Lynn. Derry's fur sounds like my Neville's. But he's going to feel chilly on that spot.

That first cartoon is so funny (and sadly, kind of true). We are glad that Derry's readings with the Freestyle Libre seem to be accurate. Here's hoping with that, and the serum fructosamine test, you and the vet can figure things out for sweet Derry. XO

Derry is looking good. I hope the fructosamine numbers will come back and show he either need less insulin or hopefully none at all. Maybe just some of the new food you are feeding is helping him. All the best!!
