We dodged the worst of it

We definitely dodged the winter "bullet" in our region, with 8 cm on Friday and probably a few more on Saturday, a dusting early on Sunday (or that could have been blowing snow). Nothing like other parts of Ontario and oh my gosh, upper New York State. I feel for them!

Snapshots below from a walk on Friday.

Snow makes everything look so magical, but the reality of getting around, especially on foot, is vastly different. Our city must be the worst in the country for sidewalk clearing (lack of), even at bus stops, and I don't think they ever have sanded or salted said sidewalks, even when/if they get plowed. I'm sure long-time followers of this blog are tired of my annual complaint!

Anyway, we're supposed to have a warm-up this week, so most of the snow should disappear--I hope. It's too early for it to come and stay.

Some kitty has ventured outside into the (enclosed) back garden a few times, but mostly he prefers to be inside and warm.

BTW, I had made a vet tech appointment for this Thursday, for Derry to have the sensor removed (glued on with skin glue). However, yesterday morning I noticed it was mostly off anyway, so I was able to just gently remove the little bit that still was attached. Yay! So Derry does not have to go back this week, and I will give him a bit of a respite before I have another one put on, given that his numbers have remained so low (knock on wood).

Yes, it's as cold out as it looks, below! Minus double-digit Celsius windchills today, like January. Brrr.

I was proactive yesterday and managed to wrap Christmas gifts for my mom and my aunt. I didn't have a lot, but it still took me far too long. Some people like to wrap; alas, I'm not one of those people. I'm also not good at it, probably because I don't enjoy it. Still, I made it through and I packed everything up, took the box to the nearest post office this morning. OMC, Canada Post charges an arm and a leg for mailing, it's appalling.

Oh, if you've been reading this blog for a while, you might recall that my fridge died in the spring, and I had to replace it, along with the stove/oven that was falling apart. Well, the old saying is that things come in threes, right? Yesterday my 22+ year old microwave gave up the ghost. I wasn't expecting it to konk out, I would have expected the washer (which still needs replacing!) or perhaps the television, which gives me the black screen of death from time to time. Anyway, I popped out to Canadian Tire in between the snow squalls and got a replacement, though I'm sure it won't last 22+ years.

The new microwave, below.

I had to fork over more money than I anticipated, but it was slim pickings and I didn't want to bus all over the city to save a few dollars, or wait several days for one via Amazon. I use the microwave multiple times a day to heat/reheat; next to my toaster/convection oven and kettle, it's the most-used kitchen appliance. It's a small one, but not tiny: 900 watts/0.9 cubic feet, as the old one was. I looked at a 700-watt one, but it was so small I don't think you could actually get a dinner plate into it, and I didn't want (or need) a larger one. I sincerely hope it lasts at least a handful of years, and I also sincerely hope that's it for 2022! It's been a very expensive year, with the new fridge and stove, the bathroom reno, all of Derry's vet visits and tests and sensors, now the microwave. Enough already!

Take care, everyone, and stay warm and cosy if you're getting winter weather, or cool if you're in warmer climes!

I'm glad your snow wasn't too bad, here that much would be called a disaster and everything would be closed. Hey, at least you have new appliances now. I'm sure glad Derry's numbers are stable, good job Derry!

HAHAHA! That cartoon is the BEST. Our Ava is the sweetest kitty ever, but she is so much more confident than she was when she first came home. :)

So glad to hear you dodged the brunt of that storm, but sorry to hear your city has not improved on their snow cleanup skills. And sorry to hear your microwave died. We had that happen a while back, so we feel your pain a little bit!

And HOORAY for not having to make another vet visit. I bet you and Derry are both super glad for that. Stay warm and be careful walking around on those not-so-well shoveled and salted sidewalks, dear friend.

Kim, I think the snow is beautiful... but I don't want to be out in it. I don't do cold well, so like Derry, I'd prefer to be inside and warm (preferably by the fireplace and wrapped in a warm blanket and flannel shirt).

I'm sorry about all your appliances... must be that time of year. Last year it was around Christmas when our Aga went out... and my cousin in N.O. had to replace her microwave just yesterday. To add to that, our old dryer stopped working last week, but luckily it was only the fan motor that needed replacing, not the whole dryer.

Stay warm! And do be careful in that snow... I imagine there are lots of slips and falls.
Dearest Kim,
Oh my, you live in a winter wonder land—when ONLY viewed from the warmth of your home...😏
So happy for Derry that he's for the rest of the year free of any vet visits and such!
Well, I'm not a good packer either... hate to do that and we often had the excuse that you are not allowed to package things when flying—you have to be able to show the customs what it is.
Once they tore apart a very nice gift from my brother for a Dublin, Georgia friend they's visited.
That looked awful and what could I do?
So we learned!
Yes, mailing out anything is almost too costly—no matter what option you select.
Times have changed for the worse.
Oh, sure things do break down and when it rains it pours!
We too replaced our 33 year old microwave that we used in Italy in 1989 and then brought it home. Our kitchen got built with 220 volt and 110 volt as per Pieter's request. So we could plug in all our European kitchen appliance.
The microwave that died was a 0.7 cu. ft. and 700W Sharp in white and I found us another Sharp, same size etc. only the window is black... So far so good and we indeed wonder how long this one will last!
Things are by far not being build as sturdy as we once knew... All for $$$($) and there is absolutely NO concern for the environment with enormous waste piles being created that way. Have you ever rad about any complaint?!
That kitty cartoon is SO true.
Shy in the beginning but in the end they sure rule the house!
BUT we still love them. Got a whack on my nose early morning from Spooky as he wanted me to get up so breakfast would be in sight... Went to sing in the choir with a red claw mark.
But that will heal quick and it was only one mark, not from a full paw.
Stay cozy. Here it will be +2°C tonight but it is nippy outside.
Hugs,
Mariette
I am glad you missed the worst of the snow.
Hopefully you have finished with all your breakdowns and everything will work perfectly from now on.
That is good news that Derry's numbers are staying low and you were able to get the sensor off and save another vet visit.
Royal Mail postage from the UK is ridiculously expensive too. Internal mail went up to 68p. this year for 2nd class, and first class went up by 10p. to 95p. I was surprised though that postage to North America is the same as last Christmas at £1.85. Still far too expensive though.
Oh Kim, what you missed out on with deep deep snow you made up four in the aggravation of a new microwave. And no appliances are not made it all the way they used to be so I hope you get at least 10 years out of it. It's nice that Derry gets a break this week by getting to skip a trip to the doctor. He looked good laying there on I think what was a heating pad. I tried to get Precious to use one this weekend while it's been bitter bitter cold. And as much as she likes to stay warm she would not use it. Lynn and Precious XX

Dryers are a pretty easy fix, at least the old ones are, without any electronics. I'm glad you didn't have to replace yours! I had mine repaired a few years ago, but like the washer, it's over 22 years old now and probably is living on borrowed time.

BTW, I don't want to be out in the snow and cold, either!!!

I hope your nose is healing quickly, Mariette. When Derry was young and first adopted, he would stick a claw UP my nostril to wake me up. Yikes! I don't think he realized what he was doing, of course, and he's since learned to tap my nose with his paw (most times). Nowadays, though, he usually just hollers at me from downstairs, at 4 or 4:30 AM, and that gets me up quickly enough!

Yes, Derry was on one my heating pads. (Love the extra-large ones!) He'll lie on it for a bit, on the lowest setting, then move off when he's had enough. I actually have two pads, one for him and one for me, so we don't have to "argue" over who gets one. :-P

BTW, I might actually take Derry in closer to Christmas and have another sensor put on, or I might wait, I haven't yet decided. I'll give him a few weeks' break anyway.

Oh I'm so glad your weather wasn't as bad as it was in New York state. Wow that was some incredible amounts of snow. Yes, I agree with you that the snow looks so beautiful in your photos but I'm sure (although I have no experience with living in it) it's difficult to move around in. OH goodness what is it with all the stuff failing? I understand it's been a year of one thing or another failing on my end. I had to deal with what I thought was the fixed AC unit only to find out the fan motor had died. More $$$ after thinking I had fixed the problem in June. Which was even bigger $$$$! Big thing I have to face next year is painting the house. Oh I'm not looking forward to finding the right person and getting that done. AT any rate, on a better note Derry is looking so good and we hope everything goes well this week!

That last picture does indeed look frigid; Derry's a smart fellow to stay indoors most of the time. My Tucker didn't have to go back to the doctor to have his sensor removed, so I'm not surprised Derry's pretty much came off on its own. As for micro-wave ovens, I'll have to remember what you've written. Mine is going strong so far, but it's forty years old, big and heavy, like a block-house on a hostile frontier, so it mya not outlast me. Then again, it might.
I'm glad to hear that Derry's numbers are staying low. Also, smart boy for not venturing out into the white stuff-however magical it might look! Yes, things breaking down seem to happen in threes. Also, at the most inconvenient of times. Emily and Willow say hello.
