Another vet visit for Derry

I debated on waiting to post until I get the results back tomorrow (Thursday), but then thought it might be better to give readers a heads-up on the latest with Derry, in case the news is the worst-case scenario.

As he's gotten older, he's become a bit messier in the litter box when he pees, and I frequently have to wipe his backside, otherwise he does it himself--usually on the carpet.

On Sunday I noticed that the colour of the urine on his butt fur was brown, not normal. I told myself not to panic, but the same thing occurred on Monday.

So off he went to the vet late yesterday afternoon, for a urine analysis and full bloodwork.

They took a look at the urine in-house (just a "quick" look) and there IS a lot of blood in it. The vet said that Derry's bladder looks irregular, possibly a benign polyp, or possibly a cancerous tumour of course. (I brought up the cancer possibility first.)

He's NOT exhibiting any clinical signs of cystitis or a blockage such as being in the litterbox frequently and making tiny pee clumps, but something is going on.

The vet sent me home with four doses of buprenorphine for any pain, while we wait for the results to come back.

I will say now that IF this turns out to be bladder cancer, I will make the choice to let Derry go. I will not put him through surgery at his age, and I will not let him suffer.

If it's something benign, I will NOT give him Metacam on a regular basis, which was the vet's suggestion. I HATE that vets in Canada push that drug; the US product carries black box warnings not to give more than ONE dose, that it can cause renal failure and death in cats.

Anyway, once I have the results, I'll be able to discuss next steps with the vet. If this IS something benign, I have to wonder if all the vet visits this fall/winter have brought this on, given how sensitive and nervous Derry is, how easily stressed.

So that's where we're at the moment. As I wrote at the beginning, I wanted to give readers a heads-up, to avoid any potential shock in the event of the worse-case outcome. I respect that people don't want to post about their pets' illnesses, but personally, it really comes as a blow when suddenly you read about an animal's passing, with no prior warning.

I certainly hope it won't come to that in Derry's case. I'm not ready to let my "baby bear" go...but then no one is ever ready to let go.

I will post again when I know what we're dealing with.

Thank you, Ann, for this lovely graphic:
Peace.

did they do an ultrasound? it could be bladder stones

Not yet. The vet mentioned it as a next step if the test red are inconclusive. The bladder is an irregular shape, hence the thought of polyp or tumour.

Kim, thank you so much for letting us know about your precious boy. I love him as I have all your babies since I've known you. And you are right. I kept Admiral's failing except for hints at it, to myself as to me, it made it more certain that she was failing if I said that. Silly, but a loving mistake. I know it was a shock when I reported she passed. You are right. Love and purrs and prayers to Derry and you. I will be waiting to read how he is.

It's not a mistake, Carole. People have to post as they see fit, and I respect that. ❤️

I have followed you and your cats for years. I have loved both Nicki and Derry, but Derry has always been my favourite❤️. - It's so hard when they get older, I have experienced it many times, because my first 4 cats were seniors already, when I adopted them. My love to you and Derry❤️.
Dearest Kim,
Oh, it is so heartbreaking to see our kitties age!
Their health issues are so similar to that of us humans except they cannot talk.
But we, their loving human parents understand them so very well.
Our Dido (Bandido) is struggling too and we have the very same thoughts as you do.
The special food, with permission from his Vet—he does NOT like.
His vomiting at times can be so violent, it makes your heart ache.
But his fur is shiny, he's very loving and sweet and still seems to enjoy his life.
His siblings are probably aware of his illness and are very sweet to him!
Big all around hugs,
Mariette
We're sending purrs and prayers for Derry.

We send sweet Derry purrayers and POTP - and you too. One of our boys had blooy urine and after extensive tests - X-rays-ultrasounds - the diagnosis was stress-induced cystitis. So he is on special food and we try not to stress him out. We hope Derry gets some goo results too.

Ernie has had blood in his urine consistently for the past few months. It is worrisome, though he doesn’t seem to be having any real issues except when he had a bout of severe cystitis and had to be hospitalized to get IV fluids. There are other meds that can be used other than metacam. Hoping you get some good news tomorrow.

I've been offline for a few days and I missed this until this morning. I cannot help but feel deep concern and hold up purring thoughts for you and sweet Derry.
Healing Pawkisses for your sweet girl Derry and Purrayers for a good outcome🙏🐾😽💞
I'm just devastated because I know the outcome. I'm beside myself and hurt so badly for you. You know how I loved BOTH of your boys. They were the most unique gray tabbies. And probably the most handsome (sorry Cody!! Cody was in the top 3with your boys). (((hugs)))
