Presqu'ile, duck drama and maybe a kitty ghost

This will be a mish-mash of things, and probably very long/picture-heavy (birds!), so feel free to skip it.

Friends R & C came up for a visit on Sunday February 12th, and I went back with them for a couple of days, for a much-needed mini-getaway. Time with friends, out in Nature, is the best kind of therapy, IMO.

Above, we had gone to Presqu'ile Provincial Park late Sunday afternoon and again on Tuesday morning, walked along one of the trails where the birds (mostly chickadees) are accustomed to being fed. However, we got lucky, as there were two nuthatches around, one of whom was persuaded (with much patience) to come down to us. The first pic above is mine, the second was snapped by R -- that's my gloved hand holding up the seed. What a joy!

The chickadees were plentiful; the one above was on R's hand.

Below, Miss Kitty, the stray Siamese that R & C took in several years ago. She's a spoiled princess now, as she should be.

More pics from the two-day visit:

I really appreciate their kindness in letting me visit. I came back on Tuesday evening (the train was 90 minutes late leaving Toronto--argghh), so I don't think I outstayed my welcome. Or hope I didn't!

********
Yesterday was Family Day, a provincial holiday in Canada (though it might go by different names depending on the province/territory), and since it was nice out, I went for a walk along Trailhead Place and into Lake Ontario Park.

All the duck drama took place in a little cove on the other side, closer to the condos:

There were several females minding their own business, feeding (not all pictured below), as well as four males. One of the males (pictured in the second snapshot below) was working hard to keep the other three away.

I stood and watched them all for quite some time, wondering when duck-breeding season starts. There certainly was a lot of (biologically-driven) drama!

The bonus was this robin that came over to say hello.

It was nice to see that harbinger of Spring, even though we're bracing for a wallop of winter weather.

The "ghost" event happened last night, after 11 PM. I had gotten up for a bio break, then was just settling down in bed again when one of the small motion sensor lights I turn on at night came on.

I turn two on at night, one on a bookcase in the upper hall, and the other on the low shoe bench by the front door, just in case I need to find my way around in the event of a power outage. It was the downstairs one by the door that came on, and I have to say that it completely freaked me out. Enough that I actually screamed, then grabbed my phone and got up to investigate. (Never read a mystery novel before shutting out the light!)

The thing is, anytime Derry would walk that way after I'd gone to bed, heading for the stairs, the light would come on. It's a bright daylight LED one, small but mighty, and it illuminates that area. I don't recall it going off by itself before and I think all the hair on my arms stood up. I went down the stairs and told Derry, out loud, that if it was him to stop it, he was scaring the beejeepers out of me. (I don't do well with the idea of ghosts and I don't like to be scared.) I actually switched both detectors off, then went back to bed, but had to listen to a soothing meditation to calm down.

There's quite likely a logical explanation for that occurrence...but maybe, just maybe, it was Derry in spirit. Whatever it was, I'd prefer that it didn't happen again, thank you very much.

Below, two final pics from my little outing yesterday, both in Lake Ontario Park.

Take care; peace.

Looking a the pictures a few times. I enjoy all the wild birds seen, just not really liking the snow you have piled up and I am guessing rather raw and bitter out. Some of the birds I feed get mouthy when I go out and interupt them, but I've never tried feeding them out of my hand. Glad you could do that, as long as your fingers were not blue, lol. And Miss Kitty looks a lovely girl. We don't have passenger trains close to me, so I have never ridden one. I imagine it could be nice, as I enjoyed a National Park train ride in 2021 and 2022. Stay warm, and watch out for haunts. Lynn and Precious XX

I'm actually taking the train to Halifax, NS in April to visit my mom. I transfer in Montreal to the "Atlantic," have a sleeper car with a shower booked (both ways). I used to be able to fly out of our small city to Toronto, then on to Halifax--one booking, a simple switch of airplanes. But Air Canada pulled out at the beginning of COVID (right after the city spent a small fortune upgrading the runways and airport) and now we're all stuck. It would take me the better part of two days to take a train or bus to Toronto, get to Pearson airport (with possibly a hotel stay overnight both going and coming), etc. WAY too much stress for me. The train might be slow, but at least it's easier. And right now, I'm all about things that are as easy and as stress-free as possible.

I already had a dream with him in it, he was curled up in the sunshine under a tree and I was passing by, stopped to cuddle him. He could come to me in dreams, not freak me out at night. LOL.

I'm glad I'm not the only one, Carole. If this were a typical occurrence, the light turning on by itself, I wouldn't have thought twice about it. But....!

Kim, I love your pictures... especially the last one of the rocks by the water (reminded me of Hog Island, Maine). And as for Derry visiting, I wouldn't be surprised. I sometimes see a shadow or something that passes in the house and I always felt it was the spirit of one of our cats. But living alone, I can see how that could be scary for you.

I'm so glad you had a lovely visit with your friends, getting out and being in nature is truly healing. What a scary moment but nice in a way too, I'd like to think it was Derry saying hello.

We had a poltergeist in the old house growing up in the country, or so we called it. It was the only way to explain the strange noises! It always unnerved me; maybe that's partly why I freak out now. There was also an ongoing, strange occurrence after I moved in with my ex back in Halifax days; even he heard the sound at one point. (Just outside our apartment door, a very specific noise. I never could bring myself to open the door and check! I always figured it was some relative, checking on me, knowing I was making a mistake. LOL.)

I hope he's okay, not confused or upset or scared. I hold onto the dream I had of him a couple of weeks ago, happy in the sunshine. ♥
How cool that you were able to feed the birds out of you had, that would make me happy too. Yes, that was Derry coming to visit, he didn't mean to scare you.

We're pretty sure Derry will find a way to let you know he is still with you in a way that won't make you uncomfortable.
Gee! Looks like you had s great time with friends!!
Very nice too that you had birds eating out of your hand. Bet that was fun.
Nightlight suddenly coming on.... a bit of a "yikes" moment.
I would like to think it was Derry.

Such wonderful photos of your adventures, Kim. Thank you for sharing them with us!

I do think that was Derry visiting you. His spirit is too sweet to scare you on purpose, so I bet that part was an accident. XO

I don't think he meant to either. My scream would have scared him!
Kea said…
I'd like to think so, but Derry wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, so to speak. Lol. The sweetest baby anyone could hope to share their life with, but not the smartest.

Definitely a scary moment, perhaps for us both. Lol.

If it was him, I know he didn't mean to scare me. He wouldn't understand, though, how freaked out I would be. It's too soon, my grief is too close to the surface. I do hope and pray that his spirit is okay, happy and whole.
That was a lovely visit with friends. The night light was Derry checking you were all right. He wouldn't have thought it would scare you. They do come back to check on us. I am 100% sure about that.
What great news for you to travel to see family. The stash of books will come in handy on the train ride. And then lots to blog about when you are home. I realize this trip is coming at the cost of Derry. I haven't spent a night away from home in 15 years. The last 5 of Seney and not with Precious, who seems to be a one person kitty. This is just my decision and not really necessary.

Finding a good pet sitter is challenging, IMO. The trip is not for fun, my mom is in very poor health and I've not seen her in almost five years. Still, I would rather Derry be alive and well and have the struggle to find someone to pet-sit.
Kea said…
Thanks for that. You must have had your own experiences as well. ♥

It is nice to get away, eh? I'd love to go anywhere by train, even on local trips. Some excellent pictures resulted; I especially liked the one of the male striding along the sands, confidently. As for Derry, I don't imagine he thought he'd scare you by coming back for a visit. He'll probably stick to visiting you in dreams from now on...

Kim I'm sorry I missed this most wonderful post about your mini getaway with your friends. I am a lover of birds too. I wanted to be sure to tell you I 1000000% agree with this line:
"There's quite likely a logical explanation for that occurrence...but maybe, just maybe, it was Derry in spirit. Whatever it was, I'd prefer that it didn't happen again, thank you very much."

I truly believe our Angels are watching and let us know in mysterious...ways when they pop in and out. Derry wanted you to know...he is with you in spirit

Wonderful that you were able to get away for a mini-vaca. Feeding the birds from your hands would be so fun.
Seeing your photo of the robin is making me wish spring would hurry up. Nasty cold here these last few days and I'm tired of it.
If it was Derry, I'm thinking your scream scared him too, and he'll stick to the dreams in the future.
I'll tell you, I would have hollered too if that happened to em.
Kim I am so happy you were able to get away for a MUCH DESERVED break with friends and I am SURE you didn't overstay your welcome!!!! As for the light, yep, that was Derry. As Brian and others said, I don't think he meant to scare you one bit. He probably wanted to check to be sure you were ok. He is always with you and he just wanted you to know that! (((hugs)))
