Snail-like progress on the reno
First, look who's back!
I've seen Leonard's kitty prints in the frost and snow on my step through the winter (the little snow we did get), but other than once (maybe twice), I've not actually seen him face-to-face until this morning. It's nice to see that he's as food motivated as ever. LOL.
As for the reno...Arrgh, it's so much harder than I thought to choose countertops and flooring! I had gone up to their showroom last Friday over lunch, brought back a few samples of each, but while I really liked them in the showroom, I wasn't happy with how they looked in the house.
So yesterday I popped up over lunch again (all those taxis are NOT cheap, but buses don't go out that far) and, with the help of one of the staff, found a few more possibilities. The designer and installer are coming to the house on Thursday morning for final measurements and will bring the samples then, so I really hope I can come to a decision. I don't want this place to be my "forever" home, though Goddess knows it feels like I've been here forever already, so what I choose will not necessarily be what I would pick in a different house. I want to go as neutral as possible, want the colours to mesh with either warm (beige) tones or grey tones, depending on the owner's preferences.
BTW, a couple of weeks ago, one of the under-sink cabinet doors fell off its top hinge. I screwed it back on as best as I could (the wood is shot, the hinge can't be fixed properly), but it fell off again this morning.
It stayed like that for a while, but has since completely given way. I gave up and just took it off. By the time demo day comes around, there won't be anything left to demo! 😁
Nice, eh? LOL.
As soon as I took the door off, I said out loud, "Have at 'er, Nicki," because angel Nicki used to LOVE to dash under the sink any chance he could. He was always so proud and full of himself when he did, too.
Both pics of Nicki, below, are from March 2010. Full of mischief and far too smart for my own good.
Heaven only knows what kind of havoc his spirit is wreaking!
As for my trip west to visit Dad, that's coming up quickly (early April)! I mailed a box of toiletries and other items to dad's address at lunchtime today. I'm not checking baggage this time and of course airlines have strict limits on the size of liquids you can carry aboard. Plus my carry-on just isn't large enough for both clothes and toiletries and all the miscellaneous items that women need. So Canada Post seemed like a good idea, as it means I can take just the bare necessities with me, a few things I would need if I get stuck overnight due to a cancelled flight.
That's about it, I think. I haven't felt like blogging lately because I haven't had anything to write about, and I have other things on my mind. The first anniversary of Mom's passing is coming up on March 15th, and that's a tough one. I'm glad to have other things to occupy my mind and attention, though.
Take care, everyone, and I'll pop round to visit at some point, if I haven't already.

Great idea to mail things on out rather than to even try to pack and carry or check through for more airfare. Hope they get there before you, but if it is like our postal system, you should have sent it right after Christmas!
Great to see a post and will be thinking about you for your Mother's passing. Lynn and Precious
Sweet that Leonard is paying you visits and enjoys his treats.
Oh, the light in a showroom for tiles and such can be so 'off' with reality.
But better take your time and select the right things.
Taxis are expensive... well driving a car is very expensive with the high gas prices at present!
Nicki was a funny kitty for checking under the sink for any intruders or whatever.
Your Mom already 1 year in heaven—unreal but looking back, my own Mom is gone for 9 years already.
Not checking in anything is such a convenient way of traveling.
Hugs,
Mariette + Kitties
Those first anniversaries are always the hardest. I have to admit in the last few years, I rarely remember the anniversary of Mom or Dad's death (21 and 16 years ago). I do think of them often though.
Take care and remember the good times.
Renos always seem to take longer than you think, don't they? We bet you will figure out those colors and patterns and such, and that it will be great in the end.
How funny that you invoked Nicki's spirit when the cabinet fell off. Love those photo memories of him.
We'll be thinking of you with the anniversary of your mom's passing coming up. We truly will.
And it's good to see the outsider-cats after they haven't shown up for a while. I think you wrote that Leonard had a home somewhere...
Thinking of you for the anniversary of your mum's passing.
Thank you for sharing a photo of Leonard the Tabby. He looks a lot like your beloved Nicki.
My mind's eye sees Nicki on a grand adventure under the sink while not disturbing anything under there. Kinda comical that the door to the cabinet is on a mission to self destruct.
Good luck with the final selection.
What a wonderful idea to mail your toiletries to Dad.
We are hearing there is an increase in the price airlines are charging per bag.
Sending lots of warm and comforting thoughts as you remember Mom.
Hugs Cecilia
