Musings on a Small Life

A few "funnies" for a smile today. BTW, I'm on holiday next week so might or might not be around. Happy (early) Canada Day to my fellow Canadians! I'm especially proud to be living in "the true north strong and free" right now. 🇨🇦 Have a great day and weekend, all! 

In Winners/HomeSense on the weekend. She's about eight years old, was a rescue when she was approximately two. She was a very good girl for her human mom. She posed perfectly! 

I got home a short time ago from five hours of errands in the baking heat, and found the welcoming committee on my doorstep. George was meowing his head off, as he wasn't around early this morning (we had severe thunderstorms roll through last night). So he was insisting that I hurry up with his Fancy Feast.  Jake was more nonchalant, too hot to expend the energy.  He was on my step this morning, before I left at 8 AM, and already had his Fancy Feast treat. Of course I gave him more. 😁 I sincerely hope their humans kept them inside last night, it was intense!  If you're in the middle of a heat wave, stay hydrated and as cool as possible! 

I met this 12-week old girl on my walk to the grocery store at lunchtime. She's a mix of so many breeds, she's truly a "mutt'. Name is Nymeria. I had to ask the woman twice, and I still couldn't remember, but she said the pup was named after a wolf character in "Game of Thrones." So I just Googled and got it. There's nothing like puppy (or kitten) kisses to perk up a day!  

A dear friend's elderly mum passed away in the early hours of this morning. She had been in the hospital for a short time, end of life care. I hope that if she and my own mom meet, in spirit/energy of course, that they share a glass of wine together (so to speak), and raise a toast to lives lived as best they could.   My thoughts and prayers are with my friend, her husband, and her family.💔🙏      But this reminds me that life is mostly about waiting, isn't it? The land of limbo between "milestone" events.    Waiting for a birth, waiting for a death, waiting for someone to call, for marriage, for divorce, for test results, for surgery, to move, to get a job, to be let go from one's job, to retire....everything in between those bookends of birth and death.   It makes me appreciate the days I have even more. Happy Father's Day to all the caring, loving dads out there, of both human and non-human Beings! Comments are off. 

Finn, below, is an even bigger mooch than George, which says a lot. Jake came for his Fancy Feast early this morning. A short time later, I found Finn on my step, eating a few bits that Jake had missed.  Then I couldn't get rid of him, probably because I gave him a handful of Greenies and tried to lure him away.  Jake returned, wanting more (he really loves the FF salmon pate I have on hand). He ended up getting trapped on my top step by Finn, who also had returned, and someone's dog on a leash. (The man is nice enough, but seems to be without common sense when it comes to non-humans.)  Turns out that Jake does NOT like Finn! Or dogs, for that matter.  I escaped into the house, in case things came to kitty blows, but Finn finally decided to move on.  Jeepers, all that kitty drama and it wasn't even 7 AM....

In keeping with May, June 1st (last Sunday) was chilly, more like April weather. Of course I picked that morning to go to Lake Ontario Park! I always pick the cold days to go for waterfront walks. (Note: The pics were snapped on Sunday, but I've posted essentially the same views many times over the years.)    I wonder how long that tree will hold on! Hardy folks, to be out in a speedboat when it was so cold!     What I didn't count on was all the midge flies! I thought they'd be done by now, but nope, there were swarms of them everywhere, and while they don't bite, they'll cover you from head to toe, get in your eyes, nose, mouth....they're gross. They were so bad that I had to abort the walk before I got to Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. I took last week off as vacation (the four days after the Victoria Day Monday). Ha! Mostly it was cold and rainy, and I heard on the news last Friday that we're having the coldest May in 10 years. I believe it!   Below: May 16 sunrise, a very brief burst of colour in the otherwise grey and gloom.     All was not lost for the time off, though, as I had a couple of appointments and spent every morning out anyway, in spite of the weather. I also had lots of cosy tea and reading time in the afternoons.   Below: I swung by campus on the holiday Monday (May 19), to get a few pics of the cherry blossoms before they were all gone. OMC, it was COLD! I didn't linger!     I also had taken Monday May 12th off, as friends had kindly come up to help me in the little garden. We dug up the invasive stuff, as well as the two hostas by the fence that got too much light and fried to a crisp by June/July every year.
