And *I* was worried about the full moon?
I won't go into all the details, but yesterday morning our unit was called into a meeting with one of the other units that form our larger umbrella group. We were asked, by the second-in-command of the entire organization, to wait in the room until my boss's boss had left the building. (In other words, was escorted out.)
I have no further information at all.
But all of us, including my boss, had our jaws hanging open to the floor. Only one person from our larger group knew beforehand (this person's second-in-command).
It can only fall into one of three categories: unethical/criminal, personal or political. My boss now knows but can't disclose the information, other higher-ups know but can't disclose what happened. I can't imagine this person being unethical in any way, shape or form after 20+ years here, but stranger things have happened. And I can't imagine it would merely be a matter of not liking the work being done or how it was being done, or even an issue of restructuring. In those cases, wouldn't the person be allowed to resign, allowed to save face?

All of us here are completely "gobsmacked," as Old Kitty might write. I admit to having spent a very restless night, turning this over and over in my mind, all sorts of scenarios flitting through my brain. I'm dying (figuratively) to talk about this to my cubicle mate, because she's very discerning, intelligent, thoughtful, etc., but until she knows (this is public now, but slow to filter down to lower levels), I can't say anything. Arrrghhh!
I guess I didn't need to be so concerned about the full moon this month, at least not for myself.
Purrs from the boys and peace from me.
Update: It's now filtered down, and speculation is rampant. Could it be as simple as being at loggerheads on certain matters? Could this person have been told beforehand that unless you do such-and-such or change such-and-such, you'll be out, with the person digging in heels and not budging?
There's no way to find out. I only hope next week is less...interesting...than this week has turned out to be.

Lunch time a couple of days ago, down by a waterfront park.

I stayed in touch with him and watched him sink into depression. And all I could do was let him hang out at my place just so I know he wasn't about to do anything stupid. He's fine now, but the first few months was terrible.
Still I can understand why your entire area was totally gobsmacked!

Could it have been budgetary?
In my experience in the public sector it is rare for someone to be escorted out - when someone is redundant they get months of notice. Unfortunately that leaves either a serious abuse of information/systems etc. or a serious conflict with senior management.
In any event, it's an ugly time for everyone. Morale and productivity tend to go down as everyone talks and worries!
Good to hear you have a cube mate to talk it over with! Take care.
