"If at first you don't succeed..."

"...try, try again." Twenty-five times. Because that's how many pairs of pants it took me trying on today, in five different stores, before I found one--one--pair that would fit my short, increasingly round, middle-aged body. Value Village, Sears, The Bay, Northern Reflections...all wash-outs. Finally, in the Alia/TanJay/Nygard store in the mall I found a pair that fit me.

It was depressing and demoralizing.

And made me long to eat a piece of cake just for comfort.

Which I didn't do, but only because I wasn't near a supply of good cake.

I did, however, find a pretty blouse at Value Village, along with a tote bag and two pretty plates.

Nicki checks out the blouse...will he approve?
It has a subtle shimmery look to it, because of the tiny silver dots.
One of the two plates. Nothing special, I just thought they were pretty, and they were 2 for $1.99, so not exactly a huge expenditure.
I'd been to Value Village last Sunday, for their half-price (members only) sale, and had come home with 7 tops (6 of which are fine, only 1 was a reject), as well as a lovely scarf and two totes, all 50% off.
I also bought a larger-print version of the story of Dewey, the Spencer Library cat. I might be the only cat-lover in the western hemisphere, or perhaps even planet, not to have read it.
I read the last couple of sad chapters first, just to get the bawling out of the way, then started at the beginning. (In case someone out there doesn't know, Dewey passed away in 2006, at about 18 or so years of age.) I won't reread the ending.

As for other things to catch up on: belated Happy Canada Day to those of you in this country. I'm not a "rah rah, Canada" person, but I can't think of another country I'd rather be living in right now. Well, maybe one of the Scandinavian countries, for their greater socially liberal stance and better vacation time. LOL. But we're very lucky to be here, and I'm well aware of it.

A very happy (almost) Fourth of July to those of you in the U.S.! May your holiday be fun, and even more importantly, be safe.

So I am on holiday this week, finished up last Friday at 4 PM, got a lift home from one of my co-workers (lovely of her to offer). I've been in the same department (for all intents and purposes, not counting the merger 6 years ago) for 16.5 years, and the past two work weeks have been in the top 3 of my all-time worst in terms of stress and busyness. Another co-worker came to me Friday afternoon and whispered that it was like "The Gong Show" around the office that day. (I have vague memories of that show in the '70s.) I'm doing my best to put work matters aside this week, but my co-worker and I will have to hit the ground running when we're back on Tuesday the 11th, and it's a bit challenging to let it all go right now. I'll be visiting friends for a couple of days later this week, so no doubt that will help.

Anyway, I'll stop yammering on and leave you with several pics: recent skies (the weather continues to be "moody") and Nicki and Derry.

Peace.

P.S. I used Lunapic for the photo frames, just for a change.

Love seeing the new things. It's like being along for fun while you shop. And the boys...what a treat to see their beautiful faces.

I love these goodies! I wish I were there to join you; I would. Great captures of everything. Nicki goes good with that top, too. Both look quite nice! Thanks for the wishes for Chloe Jo. She has had a very rough time of it lately. She just got home. HUGS.

The clouds and sky are beautiful. I love "moody" weather. I always love seeing pics of Nicki and Derry.

The plate is pretty! That is quite a bargain! The blouse is a nice shade of blue and I love the shimmery look to it.

I do like to bargain shop...when I'm in the mood. A friend of mine is a FAR better bargain shopper than I am, though!

Oh, I'm so glad Chloe Jo is home! Poor love. All my prayers to her, and purrs from the boys. Hugs to you!

"Moody" skies are interesting, at least.

I've decluttered so much over the past several years that sometimes it's hard to stop myself from going back (too much) into acquiring mode again. Especially when something is a dollar or two. :-)
Belated Happy Canada Day!! Your photos are great! Love the blouse! As for the jeans, you must be sooo patient, I would never in life take the time to try on 25 pairs! OMG!! And...you are NOT heavy! I did laugh though when you said "you would have but you weren't near a decent supply of cake" or something to that effect. As for Dewey, add me to the list of those who have never read it (and who have a strong aversion to it because EVERYONE has read it lol)
Kea said…
Oh, I am heavy, Caren, no getting around that. Not obese, but quite a bit overweight. I actually gave the last salesperson (woman) a quick hug when she found me a pair of slacks that fit. LOL. I was at the end of my rope!

I'm actually enjoying the stories about Dewey. He was quite a special cat. :-)

Yep, I totally understand the frustration with pants. I have a tendency to buy a couple of pairs when I finally find one that fits, if the price is right. Besides being round, I'm also short so I almost always end up having to shorten the damn things. Which makes them even more expensive - very annoying.

Love the new blue top - that can be dressy or not as you choose. Bargain shopping is great if you have the patience to weed through all the stuff. Like you, I have to be in the right mood for it.

Love the frames and the photos! The skies look ominous with what appear to be towering cumulus - did you have a thunderstorm? The boys are so handsome and look pleased to be out in the fresh air.

Have a wonderful week off!

I hope you have a relaxing holiday. Don't think about work at all. It'll be there when you get back whether you think about it or not.

I haven't heard about Dewey, never mind read about him. I read the blog of Chance, the Thorntown Library Cat, though his entries are intermittent. It used to be Tober's blog, but he died. I had no idea that he had cancer - neither did his humans until it was advanced - so when I read 'his'last entry, it was a sad shock.

The first cloud picture is very impressive. It looks like a volcanic eruption!

Hi Caren. I'm short too, but long through the rise, so most petite slacks don't fit properly. Fun, fun, fun!

There was a thunderstorm, yes, but in the distance, it didn't do anything locally. We've had a few quick-moving storms since, though. It's a wild weather summer this year.

Oh, you're right, work still will be there, whether or not I think about it. I actually was tempted to check work email today, in spite of insisting I wouldn't, but perhaps I'll leave it. I'd like to know if my immediate director has made an offer of employment to one of the two candidates for the new assistant director position we've been trying to fill for 6...7 months. They did second-round interviews on Friday, which was much of the gong show. The candidates probably were oblivious, but I'd be cutting and running, if it were me. LOL.

I've heard of Tober, and Chance too. Dewey had a fast-growing cancerous mass as well, a shock to all. Your comment made me wonder if it was the same cat somehow, but I peeked at the blog, which started in 2008, two years after Dewey's passing. I guess he started a wonderful trend!

Glad you found some things to bring you joy!

Have to tell you I didn't know when I bought the book many years ago on Dewey that he died. So it was a complete unexpected surprise. Just boom. Caught me so off guard I started wailing because I remember so clearly Abby came to comfort me. For some reason that was in her DNA. Anytime she sensed I was in distress she came to comfort me. I will always treasure that memory.

Hi Kim, love all your new things! Gorgeous tote bag. Your cloud photos are incredible.
When you mentioned you had purchased "Dewey the Library Cat" I was worried. I read it some years ago and was sad for days afterwards. Best to get the sadness over with and read all the good things Dewey did.
See you on Thursday!

Now I want cake too! :) I don't like clothes shopping so I can't imagine having the patience to try on that many pants. Glad you found some though! Sorry about the way things are going at work. Don't dread going back though because that just sucks the joy out of your days off. It took me many years to learn that! Lovely sky pics and of course the boys are always adorable!
Kea said…
If I didn't know he had passed quite some years ago it would take me by surprise too, because yes, it's boom! very suddenly dealt with at the end of the book. I'm glad I read the last two chapters FIRST, though.

Annie was like that, Debra. She always knew when I was sick or needed comfort. I was just thinking, within the past day or two, how much I miss having that. The boys mean well, I suppose, but they seem to be clueless. Or maybe we just don't communicate as well as Annie and I did.

Hugs to you.

That's how I felt, get the sadness over with first, don't revisit it.

That tote bag washed up nicely, doesn't look quite as dingy. Nice "fallish" colours. Speaking of, I popped into Michaels this AM (didn't buy anything) and all their fall floral stuff is out. Ugh!

We're all playing a wait and see game re: work, with the upcoming changes: the new assistant director position for our sub-unit, and our own director's intended retirement next spring. I have my "get out of Dodge" plan, not a particularly good one that I'd want to put into action, but one nonetheless. (That is, sell the house, which would give me enough to live for a year and start over somewhere else. At 53--54 next spring--it's not my first choice, but by the same token, I *do* have options. And if I can't tolerate the power-mongering and politics at least I know I have an "out".)

I love reading Dewey the library cat. Those are great tote bags. Hope everything sorts itself out ay work, enjoy your time away.
Kea said…
I'm definitely enjoying the time off! :-)

Work will be what it will be, the empire-building and power-mongering will continue long after I'm gone--whenever that is.

Haha I thought your first photo was of the material of the pants you bought. I feel your pain - I find it hard to find a pair to fit.

Still you came away with some nice things for not too much money.

Well, I'm getting lots of errands done, but at least at my leisure!

As for clothing...I'm well into double-digits in sizes, but almost always was as an adult. There were only a few short years where I was able to wear single digits; most of the females on Mom's side of the family are short and chunky, so there's nothing I can do about it. I *can* cut back on skim lattés of course, but what fun is that? :-D
Kea said…
LOL! I'm pretty conservative in my dress, though years ago when I was significantly smaller in girth I did have a pair of very funky, colourful capris. I'm long past that, however, and wear only black or navy slacks. Too much middle-aged cellulite to wear anything light now! :-D

All in all, I'm glad you found some nice things during your shopping excursion, Kim! Your photos, as always, are awesome -- especially the boys, and those clouds ... whoa!

Enjoy your holiday. Hooray!

Hugs!
