"If at first you don't succeed..."
"...try, try again." Twenty-five times. Because that's how many pairs of pants it took me trying on today, in five different stores, before I found one--one--pair that would fit my short, increasingly round, middle-aged body. Value Village, Sears, The Bay, Northern Reflections...all wash-outs. Finally, in the Alia/TanJay/Nygard store in the mall I found a pair that fit me.
It was depressing and demoralizing.
And made me long to eat a piece of cake just for comfort.
Which I didn't do, but only because I wasn't near a supply of good cake.
I did, however, find a pretty blouse at Value Village, along with a tote bag and two pretty plates.
Nicki checks out the blouse...will he approve?
It has a subtle shimmery look to it, because of the tiny silver dots.
One of the two plates. Nothing special, I just thought they were pretty, and they were 2 for $1.99, so not exactly a huge expenditure.
I'd been to Value Village last Sunday, for their half-price (members only) sale, and had come home with 7 tops (6 of which are fine, only 1 was a reject), as well as a lovely scarf and two totes, all 50% off.
I also bought a larger-print version of the story of Dewey, the Spencer Library cat. I might be the only cat-lover in the western hemisphere, or perhaps even planet, not to have read it.
I read the last couple of sad chapters first, just to get the bawling out of the way, then started at the beginning. (In case someone out there doesn't know, Dewey passed away in 2006, at about 18 or so years of age.) I won't reread the ending.
As for other things to catch up on: belated Happy Canada Day to those of you in this country. I'm not a "rah rah, Canada" person, but I can't think of another country I'd rather be living in right now. Well, maybe one of the Scandinavian countries, for their greater socially liberal stance and better vacation time. LOL. But we're very lucky to be here, and I'm well aware of it.
A very happy (almost) Fourth of July to those of you in the U.S.! May your holiday be fun, and even more importantly, be safe.
So I am on holiday this week, finished up last Friday at 4 PM, got a lift home from one of my co-workers (lovely of her to offer). I've been in the same department (for all intents and purposes, not counting the merger 6 years ago) for 16.5 years, and the past two work weeks have been in the top 3 of my all-time worst in terms of stress and busyness. Another co-worker came to me Friday afternoon and whispered that it was like "The Gong Show" around the office that day. (I have vague memories of that show in the '70s.) I'm doing my best to put work matters aside this week, but my co-worker and I will have to hit the ground running when we're back on Tuesday the 11th, and it's a bit challenging to let it all go right now. I'll be visiting friends for a couple of days later this week, so no doubt that will help.
Anyway, I'll stop yammering on and leave you with several pics: recent skies (the weather continues to be "moody") and Nicki and Derry.
Peace.

The plate is pretty! That is quite a bargain! The blouse is a nice shade of blue and I love the shimmery look to it.
I've decluttered so much over the past several years that sometimes it's hard to stop myself from going back (too much) into acquiring mode again. Especially when something is a dollar or two. :-)
I'm actually enjoying the stories about Dewey. He was quite a special cat. :-)
Love the new blue top - that can be dressy or not as you choose. Bargain shopping is great if you have the patience to weed through all the stuff. Like you, I have to be in the right mood for it.
Love the frames and the photos! The skies look ominous with what appear to be towering cumulus - did you have a thunderstorm? The boys are so handsome and look pleased to be out in the fresh air.
Have a wonderful week off!

I haven't heard about Dewey, never mind read about him. I read the blog of Chance, the Thorntown Library Cat, though his entries are intermittent. It used to be Tober's blog, but he died. I had no idea that he had cancer - neither did his humans until it was advanced - so when I read 'his'last entry, it was a sad shock.
The first cloud picture is very impressive. It looks like a volcanic eruption!
There was a thunderstorm, yes, but in the distance, it didn't do anything locally. We've had a few quick-moving storms since, though. It's a wild weather summer this year.
I've heard of Tober, and Chance too. Dewey had a fast-growing cancerous mass as well, a shock to all. Your comment made me wonder if it was the same cat somehow, but I peeked at the blog, which started in 2008, two years after Dewey's passing. I guess he started a wonderful trend!
Have to tell you I didn't know when I bought the book many years ago on Dewey that he died. So it was a complete unexpected surprise. Just boom. Caught me so off guard I started wailing because I remember so clearly Abby came to comfort me. For some reason that was in her DNA. Anytime she sensed I was in distress she came to comfort me. I will always treasure that memory.
When you mentioned you had purchased "Dewey the Library Cat" I was worried. I read it some years ago and was sad for days afterwards. Best to get the sadness over with and read all the good things Dewey did.
See you on Thursday!
Robin
Annie was like that, Debra. She always knew when I was sick or needed comfort. I was just thinking, within the past day or two, how much I miss having that. The boys mean well, I suppose, but they seem to be clueless. Or maybe we just don't communicate as well as Annie and I did.
Hugs to you.
That tote bag washed up nicely, doesn't look quite as dingy. Nice "fallish" colours. Speaking of, I popped into Michaels this AM (didn't buy anything) and all their fall floral stuff is out. Ugh!
Work will be what it will be, the empire-building and power-mongering will continue long after I'm gone--whenever that is.
Still you came away with some nice things for not too much money.
Julie
As for clothing...I'm well into double-digits in sizes, but almost always was as an adult. There were only a few short years where I was able to wear single digits; most of the females on Mom's side of the family are short and chunky, so there's nothing I can do about it. I *can* cut back on skim lattés of course, but what fun is that? :-D
Enjoy your holiday. Hooray!
Hugs!
