Thankful for the Small Things

 Morning sky on Tuesday

It's another slog through the work week for me. I confess that my mood hasn't been the best since the spring. I've been consistently crabby and sometimes quite low, which isn't like me. (A few days now and then, yes, but every single day--no.) I've worked hard over the past several years to consciously alter my mindset, given my past history with depression, but I feel I've back-slid over the past few months. I suspect it's a combination of factors:
  • All the work changes (change of direct boss and all that comes with it, change of top boss, a new assistant director for our sub-unit who starts on September 4th, etc.)
  • The lack of walking since the spring, because of the plantar fasciitis (both feet)--walking is my mental therapy and I miss it greatly, never mind all the extra weight I've gained on top of my already overweight middle-aged body.
  • The up and down middle-aged hormones--the hormonal impact on mood is tremendous, no one ever will be able to convince me otherwise.
  • The almost-unrelenting excessive, oppressive heat and humidity for months now. Sure, we get hot spells in the summer, but not like this. We have a break today and tomorrow, but then it's back into temps that feel like they're close to 100F with that humidex factor. It's nuts, heading into September, to have this kind of weather.
Resident work courtyard bunny on Monday

All that said, I've been making an extra effort to appreciate the small things in my day, have been jotting them down in the evenings, along with my "accomplishments" for the day. It helps, to be able to flip back and focus on the things I perceive as good, on the things that feed my soul.

Waning moon on Wednesday morning

This is the first August since I've had digital cameras that I've taken so few pics, that I've not been out "sight-seeing" around the city, taking snapshots. (The heat plus the foot issues being the reasons.) So any chance to take a quick pic of something that catches my eye has been welcome!

Last night's sunset from an upstairs window

Someone in our complex saw me a few days ago, snapping sunrise pics on the way to the bus stop. He asked if it was a passion of mine, and I was very offhand in my reply, said oh, I just like taking snapshots for myself (which obviously is the case). Afterward it occurred to me that it is a passion, being able to take nature (and critter) pics. It doesn't matter that I have chosen not to have a DSLR, I absolutely love trying to capture something that appeals to me. It doesn't matter that I have no interest in taking it further, I do it for myself and it feeds my soul. One of the many small (not-so-small to me) things for which I'm very thankful.

Cute little chippie this morning, outside our building

I truly hope that you have something that feeds your soul too; something, however small, for which you're thankful.  :-)

Peace.

Beautiful post and photos. It is important to find something that brings joy to your life. For me, that is my boys and scrapbooking. I love going through my photos (mostly of the boys) and remembering and journaling about our adventures. Sending purrs that you continue to find joy and that happiness and peace fill all areas of your life.

You DO take beautiful natural photos. I enjoy seeing them a lot. So just so you know that, your audience likes what you do as well!!! :) It's hard to be grateful, even though I too know it is something we should be. Whenever I get sick or fall ill, I think how I always take my health for granted. How I take my strong(ish) back for granted. That I take for granted my ability to care for all the things I do DO! :) Some of it requires us to give ourselves that proverbial pat on the back, and if you have the streak in you that I do, which is bit on the perfection side, it's hard to give kudos to myself. But in addition to taking lovely photos you also have a beautiful command of language and I don't know if you give yourself credit for that.

Our new boss is a scrapbooker. I've seen a couple of things she's made and they're amazing!

I'm trying to find the joys in daily life; it's really been a struggle these past 3-4 months. Of course, that's when it's most important to make the effort!

I think the whole "grateful" for thing is over-used, and unless you're in a good place in your life, it's not that helpful, IMO, no matter what the self-help "experts" claim. Focusing on your accomplishments for the day works well for me, and I mean things like changing bedding, getting laundry done, etc. The regular daily things that we tend to discount. I find that when I feel really low, jotting those down helps me more than trying to be "grateful". That and writing down a few things I enjoyed in my day. It's far less pressure that way, no added stress trying to tell oneself that life is wonderful (if it's not, I mean).

sometimes it is more than worth it to take a step back from things....I think we sometimes get so wrapped up in the little things we need to do to get through today, that we forget to "stop and smell the roses" so to speak

Kim, I would definitely say photography is a passion for you! You take such wonderful photos, love the chippy and bunny.
This has been a long summer. The heat and humidity has been awful. I am really looking forward to the cooler weather.
When I get to feeling down I remember my two cousins who died so young and a friend I grew up with who passed away the day after my dad died nine years ago. They would love to be able to be scrubbing floors or cutting the grass or watching the sunset. I must be grateful for everything in my life. And that includes YOU Kim!❤️❤️

Yes, it's easy to do! This summer has been a lot like that. Okay, ever since our new boss can aboard. LOL.

Thanks for stopping by!

Awww, you're sweet, and very kind, Robin. :-)

Yes, many don't have the opportunity to "slog" through the days and it's well worth remembering that.

BTW, I'm impressed Blogger let you leave a comment!
Kim; I hope this helps brighten your spirit; and I say this in truth; these photo's are amazing...

Thanks, Laura. Our local news does a "Weather Wallpaper" every evening, not specifically of weather-related events but of anything (flora, fauna, yes weather, other) and 9 times out of 10 I'm blown away by the photography. These are people who are true (amateur) photographers, with high-end equipment (for the most part). Once in a while I'll get a shot that I think is worthy of submitting, but not often. To be "known" in that sense is not a goal, at least not at this time in my life. :-)

As for N & D, I'm not letting them read that comment from the tabbies! :-P

Kim, everyone has their days... some maybe more than others... but still. As they say (and I tell myself) "this too will pass". And I do enjoy your pictures! Please keep sharing them. I think we need to take our "bliss" where we can.

I always enjoy your photos. Living in the suburban area as I do with a house that faces north and south, I have to make an effort to go looking for sunset photos (forget sunrise...I'm never up that early at least not until December).

I didn't realize that the fasciitis is giving you such grief. That sucks! Is there any treatment or does it eventually heal on its own?

Not saying this is where you're at, but I do know when I was working through menopause (hormone free) there were definite times when I had difficult managing my emotions. With me it was rage - and it manifested itself with a frequently raised third finger, often at fellow drivers. At work I'd hold it back and head into a bathroom stall to have my mini-meltdown. I hope whatever the cause you'll soon be feeling less stress.

Take care!
Eileen

Photography must be a passion of yours because your pictures are just so good and I really enjoy seeing them. The four pictures in this post are each wonderful and I always find myself going back and looking a few times.

I remember when I was living in Texas, I would be so jealous of your summer weather. I'm surprised it's been so hot there for so long. I hope as we get into September, it will finally cool down but not too much!

I also meant to comment that I completely agree with you about hormones effecting mood. It can be brutal. I hope you start feeling better soon.

I agree, we definitely need to find our bliss where we can. :-)

I hope you're feeling better, healing well!

Hi Eileen. My unit faces north (mostly) and south (bedroom) too. But I can see the sunrise from outside, behind my unit and down into the parking lot, which is great.

Lots of options re: the plantar fasciitis, with tons of conflicting info out there even from therapists. Mostly it takes a long time and regular gentle stretching, taking it easy, etc.

Oh, the rage! I know all about the rage. LOL. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has experienced it (in my case continues to). Eventually it will end...it's just the getting there!

It's a "myth" that this part of the country is cold all the time. LOL. This year all of eastern Canada has suffered with temps feeling as hot as the mid-40s C -- a lot of people died in cities like Montreal (mostly seniors without air con) earlier, in July, during the first brutal heat wave. I think it's getting to the point that both central heat and central air are necessities. That said, now watch, next summer will end up being the coldest on record, not the hottest!

Yeah, those hormones...eventually they'll level off, but it's the getting through to the other side part that's challenging! :-D

Your photos are great Kim - I wish I had your talent. I agree with you about the hormones affecting mood, I suffer in a similar way, and have never felt this way until the hormones started slipping away. I think for you - like me, you have probably been working steadily for 30+ years without a break of more than a couple of weeks at a time. We are tired, but really we are allowed to be, it is exhausting. I am so tired of dragging myself in and out of work every day and night, but there is no way out of it that I can see.

So this weekend I am going to try and do a couple of nice things for myself. I am going to go for a walk tomorrow and meet a friend for lunch. I need a lotto ticket, and some nice treats and then I am going to plonk myself down on the couch and watch a movie and sleep in.

Wishing you a nice weekend too. Pat the boys for me.

Your comment gave me pause, as yes, I *have* been working for 30+ years. There was a period of 1.5 years when I was still with my ex and not working, though. That was stressful in other ways, however.

You, especially, have an exhausting schedule. At least I have regular hours and work only Monday through Friday. That's pretty easy, but I feel worn down by the lack of sleep and early rising, to catch the 6:40 AM bus. I guess decades of that takes its toll!

Have a wonderful weekend of self-care!
I always enjoy your pictures as I do not live anywhere close to such beauty. I pretty much live in a concrete jungle. Very thankful for air conditioning as it's been a pretty brutal summer here in ChiTown. Had to replace the whole system last month but so worth it! Aren't you glad you have it now too?

I live bordering on a major thoroughfare and adjacent to an industrial area, so it's not pretty. The greater neighbourhood I live in, though, (south and west of my complex) is a mature neighbourhood, very pretty. I'm always looking for little patches of grass, a tree or two along my routes. Don't forget that most pics I take are cropped, sometimes highly cropped, to edit out the ugly stuff. :-)

And yes, I'm VERY glad I have air now. It totally was worth the expense!

Oh I remember the hormone thingy. With me, it wasn't mood changes as much as embarrassing hot flashes. I was working 12 hr. rotating shifts and you never knew when those monster hot flashes were coming. Very embarrassing when you were with someone very important. Because of my situation, I had to ask for some help from the Dr. It was like the best thing that happened to get rid of those horrible sleep disturbing and publicly embarrassing hot spells. Glad it's behind me.
Oh and accomplishments...I count mine exactly the way you do yours I see. Go, us!

Such wonderful photos. I especially liked the one of the moon - such detail! I can understand your low spirits. I think it may indeed be partly your weather, which I understand is very oppressive. Have you thought of acquiring a bicycle? I don't know if that would also be restricted by your feet's condition, but I find very useful. I hope this long weekend finds you in much better spirits.

My mom had terrible hot flashes. I've had a couple of timeframes of about a month or so where I've had hot flashes -- last fall and then just as our new boss was starting, end of January and through February. I take evening primrose oil, though, and when I cut back, that's when I had the hot flashes. I find it helps me! Not much helping the mood, though. LOL. Chocolate, but that's temporary...and the extra pounds on the body seems to be permanent. Ha.

I wouldn't bike in this city if you paid me. Traffic is insane. Crazy growth, with corresponding crazy numbers of vehicles added to our old infrastructure, infrastructure that can't support it. I see kids biking, no helmets, ear buds in--they're beyond stupid. Even those who bike properly are taking a great risk, IMO.
Hi Kim !

I too want to comment, and encourage your photography passion. As a (semi) professional photographer I want to tell you that you have a great eye, and do an awesome job, in spite of the fact that you are NOT using a DSLR 😹. My favorite things to photograph are animals, pets and nature....so we have much in common. I am in the midst of starting up my own pet photography business. I’ve been taking pictures for about 40 years...and the reason I tell you all this is so that you hear me when I say....you ARE a photographer ! I think we are born with the compulsion to try to capture the beauty we see around us. You are doing a stand up job of it !!

I am also a hot, crabby mess when the humidity is high 😓😫😓😫....I live in SE MI, I’m pretty sure our weather is very similar... I envy you your CA, we don’t have it ( yet )... it will be about $10,000 USD to get it installed...so, I hate Summer when it turns humid. It’s important to take care of ourselves, and I think as women we tend to put ourselves last...we don’t make ourselves, and our happiness a priority. So, do what makes you happy at the moment. Snapping pictures, cuddling N & D, thrift store shopping, blogging....and know that you have a friend in SE MI, looking forward to cooler weather, right along with you !

I would just love to send you one of my Chicks who Click (hot pink) rubber wristbands ! I’m the admin for the same named FB group, which you’re welcome to join if you’re on FB. It’s for women photographers only, a place to learn, encourage & grow.

As soon as I figure out how to upload photos to my blog, you’ll be able to see some of my work. I do have a FB page for my photography....All my Relations Photography is it’s name, if you care to check out some of my stuff...

Have a great weekend, and stay cool my friend ! 😓

Hi Beth Ann.

Thanks so much for your comment--I appreciate your words of encouragement! Yes, I would say that taking pics is, for me, a compulsion. I find that when I do, I'm in the Present Moment, when my small ego falls away and I'm fully engaged. It's one of the few things I do wherein that happens.

$10K USD is a lot for central air! I guess it depends on the size of your home and if they have to tear out ceilings or walls to do it. I was lucky, my basement is unfinished and they were able to easily access the old duct-work to remove it and move/replace it with up-to-code ducts. I'd had the furnace replaced at the same time (better deal) and it ran me between $8K - $9K for both, after all the rebates. (At the time there was an Ontario government rebate for "green" house renos, but the new ON government has cancelled that.) I also went mid-line with the products, because I couldn't afford top line.

The FB group sounds great! Alas, I deleted my FB account last month. I hadn't been on it in a long time (no patience for all the "garbage" on it), and that, coupled with all the privacy issues, made the decision to delete the account very easy. I'm not on Instagram either, or any other social media, and prefer not to be. However, I'd love to see your photography, so do feel free to leave your blog link--if it's via Blogger, it's easy enough to post your pics, but I don't know about other blogs, Wordpress for example.

You have a great weekend too (nice that both Canada and the US have an extra day, Labour Day). And thank you again for your kind words. :-)

I'm sorry it's been such a rough few months for you, Kim. I love your self-awareness, and how you've decided to look for those small encouragements you encounter each day, to reflect on and restore your soul. And I do believe your photography IS a passion. You have such a great eye for composition and your passion always shines through in your subject matter. :)

Happy Labour Day! Enjoy the long weekend, dear friend!

Thanks for your generous words, Kevin. Wait till you hit male menopause. LOL. Well, I don't think it's quite the same. :-P

Enjoy the extra day off -- at least, I presume you have Labour Day off.
