I don't think I was alone

Nicki's remains are home with me now; this morning I picked up his urn, the tummy fur I requested, and his paw prints. The paw prints are especially lovely, more than I expected, and maybe I'll post a snapshot at some point, but not today. Not when my emotions are so raw.

***

Last night, in a quiet moment, I had asked the Universe/Spirit/God (whatever you choose to call that energy) for whatever I would need to be able to do this alone, to pick up his remains.

***

I had to go back out to the emergency pet hospital, because that's where I had gone with him two weeks ago and where his remains were returned.

It's far out in the west end, past our Walmart store and pretty close to one of the exits onto and off the 401 highway.

I bused to Walmart and called a taxi from there, had the cab driver wait at the emerg clinic. Went in bawling, came back out bawling even harder.

But. It turned out that the taxi driver was (is) a cat person, has had cats all his life, has one very dear to him right now, and he completely understood my grief. When he dropped me off at our shopping centre, we chatted for quite some time after, off the meter.

***

I know, I know, that was the "hand" of Spirit, the Universe, God, whatever.

***

I wasn't alone the night Chumley died, a neighbour was with me. I wasn't alone the morning I had to let Annie go, a co-worker was with me.

I used to beg the Universe so frequently not to let me have to go through letting Nicki or Derry go when I was all alone.

But there I was two weeks ago, alone with Nicki, making those hard decisions and doing what was best for him.

I remember later that evening, being upstairs, marvelling that I had managed to do that, alone. And then I had the sudden thought pop into my mind, "Who said you were alone?"

***

I don't think I was alone at all.

I don't know who was around me, whether Annie's spirit, or possibly both Annie's and Chumley's, or maybe a human's, but I in my heart, I don't believe I was alone. Physically yes, but not in spirit.

***

As someone who is very well-acquainted with loneliness and isolation throughout most of her life, I want to say this: If you feel lost, alone, abandoned, bereft...You are not alone. Even if no other physical Being is with you, there is an energy, spirit--call it what you will--around you. I know only too well that can be ice-cold comfort when you desperately need the touch of a human for a hug or a back rub, for someone to hold you up and tell you it will be okay.

Even so.

Please know, deep in your heart, that you are not alone.

Peace and Blessings to you.

Dearest Kim,
Yes, you are absolutely right about that! We are being watched over all our life by our special guardian angel and in my humble opinion, yes all souls from our loved ones that are no longer with us, watch over us too. God only knows, but my guess is that they can do more for us in that position than the one before when they were in the flesh... Animals must have souls too, they are so tender and so loving and unconditionally faithful to their human(s).
Barty is still eating well and that made us so happy. The floors are mopped, a clean house and we went to Church. So much to be grateful for still! Our best friend's passing on the 5th is of course not so happy but still it is good that he is no longer in pain...
Big hugs to you and good that you can write about it all. We only once received an Angel bag from the vet after we'd dropped off Smokey, a poor soul of a cat-toddler-boy that someone dropped off at our driveway. Found him inside the magnolia tree, skin over bone and so sick. Guess they dumped him because of it. So we took him to the vet and paid some $ 800 for him but there was not a cure and we were afraid he would be in too much discomfort. Never will I forget that how I clipped out his tangled part Persian furs on his belly. He was on my knees, on his back and he let me do what I needed to; such a sweet boy and good thing is that he knew LOVE before he came back inside that angel bag.
Big hugs,
Mariette

Thank you for sharing this beautiful and important truth, Kim. You are so right. We're never really alone deep in our hearts. What a blessing that the cab driver is a cat guy. Hugs to you, friend.

I am so thankful that the cab driver showed you such compassion and that wasn't just a quirk of fate either. This was a beautiful thought provoking posting, thank you for sharing.
oh Kim, this was so beautiful! My heart goes out to you. I remember when I had to let Bobo go, my husband was here, but when I picked up his ashes I did that by myself. Like you, I was crying beyond belief upon arrival and worse leaving. I could barely bring myself to look at the bag for a few days. I could barely look at his urn too. I used to carry his ashes from room to room........it was so hard as you know all too well. I am so happy that taxi driver was compassionate. There ARE kind people out there and I agree with you that we really aren't alone. I probably mentioned this before to you but when Bobo passed I couldn't bear the thought of him not being in every room with me as he always was. I made collages of photos of him and put at least one in EVERY SINGLE ROOM (they are still hanging even 12 years later)........it is so hard for me to imagine Nicki being gone and if it is hard for me, I am overcome with emotion of knowing how hard it is for you. Kisses and love to you and Derry xoxo

You're making me cry over here. I'm glad that driver gave you some comfort; I completely understand how hard it is when you are alone, enduring these hard things. I did with my two. I do believe God is with us, but... I still feel so alone.
Damn this post was so moving and full of sadness but I am glad I did

I am so grateful that I am never alone. Not is sadness nor joy. I have had to bear Admiral's passing by myself and picking up her ashes. But I was not alone and bereft of Spiritual comfort. I am glad of your post for telling others who need to know they are not alone... if they can come out of their singular beliefs patterns they impose upon themselves. ❤️

The ancient Persians (the humans) believed that when a new cat was brought into a place, the spirit of the old cat stayed around to guide the new one. Or, in your case, to comfort Derry - and you.

That is absolutely beautiful. Brought tears to my eyes. I believe we are never alone as well. And I believe that the love we pour into our beloved kitties will live on forever, and is always around us. Thank you for sharing that. I lost my girl a little over a week ago....those words gave me great comfort.
Wonderful thought on being alone/not alone.
Cats are healers in so many ways. Hugs <3

Very well written - and it happens to be something with which I agree. I believe that God is always with us, and never worry that He is being cruel when bad things happen. It's just the way He has arranged the universe to be run. He has given us all we need to make the world a paradise; if we have chosen not to, that's not His fault.

It's funny that I am, in one way, the opposite of you in terms of letting go: I prefer to be alone, to make the decision alone, to have no one else to blame. But even then, I remember to thank God for giving me the friendship of these wonderful little animals. Even if He has to take them home, He has let me know them and be their friend, for a time.

A sad but lovely post. I'm like others here, grateful that this particular taxi driver was sent your way. His compassion was wonderful.

Thus far, I've always had cats to come home too, and of course, my son is here for me too. That has made it easier to leave the clinic when these awful decisions have to be made.

I could not comment when I first read this post. I just broke down in tears. I believe - no, I know we are never truly alone, although sometimes it seems that God must be busy somewhere else. Maybe he sends our furry babies to us to make sure there is always someone tangible there for us (as we try always to be there for them) - but what does one do when they have to leave us?
At any rate, Kim - we are also here for you.
Hugs,

There are times we feel alone it is then that we have to remember that we are not. This can be difficult to feel when we are in it but in reflection we know we have been supported through these times of dark. We send our love and support to you at this time and always
