An eventful start to the new year

[Warning: This is a wordy, non-cat post, so feel free to skip it.]

Derry getting cuddles over the weekend

I finished off 2019 with a new master bedroom leak (have had issues since early September, with a patch here and there), this one in between the interior bedroom wall and the interior wall of the adjoining spare room. Fun times. I moved myself out of the master bedroom and into the guest room because (a) you can't sleep when you're lying there listening to drip...drip...drip and (b) I was concerned about the potential for dripping water to come into contact with the electrical boxes in the wall. I also shut off the breaker to the bedroom (and adjoining room), just to be safe. Overly-paranoid, perhaps, but better safe than sorry.

I'll skip over the "brick wall" that trying to get a response from my property manager was (is) and say this, social media has power, when you least expect it!

Last Thursday evening I wrote an absolutely scathing Google review of the property management company, posted it (my initials, no names). But I had mentioned I'm an owner in our complex and named the complex.

Friday morning I got an email from the president of the company (who actually is my property manager's son), indicating he was disappointed to read the review (I'd been copying the office general email regarding the new bedroom leak), apologizing for any outstanding issues and asking to meet--which we did, later than afternoon, at home.

We went over all the issues (I'd provided a list, with photos, and he took his own notes and photos as well). He didn't seem impressed at the "repairs" that had been undertaken (and those that hadn't). I tried to be as diplomatic as possible, because I still have to deal with the father (officially the property manager of the complex). He said he'd have workers at my house this morning (Monday the 6th), to do whatever they could in the wet, snowy weather.

I give him full brownie points for wanting to meet with me in the first place, and keeping his word and following through.

Two guys (his own repair guys; he manages his own portfolio of properties) showed up around 8:45 AM and checked everything out, spent a long time up in the attic, etc. I think they were going to replace the gutter over the garage, perhaps do other work of that nature.

Anyway, for the first time in many years, I'm cautiously hopeful that things will get done. I told the president (son) that if things are resolved satisfactorily, I will be happy to write a glowing review. And so I will, IF these outstanding issues are addressed properly.

So while I probably would not have written that review had I known anyone actually would read it, if I hadn't done so, I still would be trying to get a response from our own property manager.

Apparently there's enough power in social media that I'm half-tempted to rejoin Facebook or join Twitter. Nah....

Peace.

Kim, I do think that social media does have power. Recently we had a problem with a service company that went on for 6 months or so... them always promising to take care of it... and not doing so. Finally we threatened to go to the Better Business Bureau, Chanel 5 news, and online to our neighborhood watch telling all so that others wouldn't have to go through this. When we did this, they agreed to let us out of the contract since they couldn't/wouldn't/didn't follow through on their promises. I don't belong to Twitter, but Facebook does have some advantages. You just have to be careful.

I'm glad you got results, finally. It's absurd, what companies/people try to get away with.

I hope Julie is doing better; I'm keeping her in my thoughts and prayers.
just stating the facts; that's all you did; scathing review or not. It shouldn't have taken
this long, and or a scathing review, for them to get the work down properly in the first place

around here, anymore, the only thing that gets someone up off their a$$ is a threat to the
BBB or attorney generals office or both; and that's just SAD

had the ceiling plaster fallen in and on someone.....well......

yea.....

I have used social media in the past and it never fails that I get a rapid response. It's sad that businesses can't/won't do what is right without the public action.

I've got my fingers and toes crossed that this time things will be done properly and in a reasonable amount of time!

Good for you for speaking out, too bad you had to do it that way to get results, but you have to do what you have to do. I find the older I am, the less worried I am about speaking my mind, Hope you get your issues resolved.

I never dreamed C-om-c-ast would see it but there did when I complained bitterly about them in my personal blog 2010 before I had a decent cell phone. They were my TV, phone and etc and most of the time it down;t work. I fell running onto asphalt and wrecked my knees forever and broke my inner wrist by trying to stop my fall. I am saying this because I was helpless for a long time...and the phone wasn't working. I couldn't get calls in or out but sporadically. As I live alone and my both legs were was swollen like I had elephantiasis-- and right arm disabled...I wrote all that in my blog saying no matter how many times I called their so called customer service nothing happened. I said I was fearful, as I might not get help as needed if I got worse. Within hours that cable company I am speaking of wrote me, then phoned and trust me...they fixed every node and down the street and went over my house and with with a fine toothed comb. And he gave me a personal phone # to call if it went down again. Media helps though I didn't know it.
Sometimes you have to shout loud and often to be heard and taken serious

Well done. I probably would not have done what you did, as I wouldn't have thought it would achieve anything. Live and learn (in my case) and (in your case) hopefully profit. I am impressed with your determination. Please keep us apprised of events.

It's insane what we have to go through to get things done sometimes. I hope they come through for you.

The way businesses of all kinds are run these days is crazy.

They won't re-roof or redo the siding (both probably much needed, the siding in particular), because that kind of expenditure won't be approved, no matter what the president might tell me. I think the best I can hope for are proper patches...which would at least be something.
Kea said…
Thanks. I hope they get resolved properly too. We'll see.

I remember that you have had a lot of trouble with them. It's nuts how people have to go public to get any action. I'm glad your issues finally were resolved at the time.
Kea said…
You're right. Shouldn't have to shout, but yes, you do. And I only posted that review in sheer frustration, not because I ever thought someone would see it.
Kea said…
I was just venting, not thinking anyone would see the review. Plot twist! LOL.

Thanks, me too. The president have been VERY responsive to my emails and texts, but I want more than "talk," I want everything taken care of properly. Some things were done yesterday, but the leaking issues remain to be addressed. It's hard, I understand, with winter weather, but I hope things can be resolved sooner than later.
Dearest Kim,
That sounds like a positive reaction to your 'citizen journalism' and that is GOOD!
Maybe the father is above the age of being active on the keyboard and/or social media? Therewith missing out on a lot of educational updates too.
But it is good that his son stepped in and he's probably taking the internal, family related' stress that comes with or from it.
Good luck to you and yes, there is nothing worse than having such annoying drip during night time.
We're so fortunate for having taken the leap with the Canadian company for replacing our leaking roof (yep, right above my spot in the bed...!) several repairs to no result, with this lifetime warranty and energy saving roof: https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2013/08/our-home-with-aluminum-interlock.html
LOVE Derry in this photo and he's such a sweet beauty, begging for cuddles no doubt!
Hugs,
Mariette

Way to go! Social media can be very influential sometimes and I'm glad this was one of those times! I hope everything is fixed to your satisfaction soon! Give Derry extra kisses from us!

We applaud you for sticking up for yourself and any others who may be impacted by poor maintenance. Dad had rentals and knows it takes a lot of work to keep them up but that is the job and if you dont want to do it dont get into the biz. We hope things work out. Nothing worse than a drip. We had one here that is fixed (we hope) but need to do the pointing on our very large chimney

I think most of the units are renter-occupied now; I'm one of the few original owners. I've been paying condo fees (townhouse condominium) for almost 20 years; they can d*mn well fix the problems that have been ignored, thank you very much. It affects my feeling of safety and security in my home, but also very much impacts the resale value.
Kea said…
Thanks, me too. I'm less hopeful they can address the leaking issues this week, because of the cold weather, and we are slated for heavy rain on Saturday, then freezing rain on Sunday.

The father is older, probably 60s, but not old. He's also a politician...need I type more?

BTW, I checked out your post and your roof: NICE.

It is nice that the son was responsive and pro active about helping you get your leak sorted out. It is a shame that this is the only way that you could get their attention.

I hope they will follow through and complete the work needed!

It's sad that's what it takes, but yes, companies are so worried about their reputations, so social media can be a powerful thing. So glad things are looking promising, Kim. Paws and fingers crossed! XO
