What better way to spend a holiday Monday?

Image
This is the spare room on the outer side of the unit, across the hall from the guest room. I wanted to repaint it last year, to a neutral colour instead of the green, but didn't get to it. As of 1 PM EDT, I've got coat #2 done. I'm almost 100% sure it will need a third coat, or at the very least significant touch-ups. Life lesson #643: Unless you can hire professionals to come in and do the work for you, don't paint your walls anything other than the lightest shade on the paint chip, whatever the preferred colour. Otherwise you'll need a lot of paint to re-cover it! (Or unless you actually enjoy painting...which I most definitely, emphatically do not .) For those of you who have a holiday today as well, I hope you're doing something fun! Feel free to come over and help me finish up. Beer and cider in the fridge, not much in the way of food (other than fruit), but I know how to call or go online for take-out.  ;-) "Obligatory" pics of ...

Longing for a longer long weekend

Saturday almost supper time already? One day left? Yesterday was our Canada Day holiday, lots of events taking place in celebration of our country's 149th birthday. I opted to forgo crowds and kids, as I have opted for many years now. Instead, I made my obligatory Canada Day early morning Walmart run. Ha! The 5+ km slog, uphill (but not barefoot in the middle of a blizzard) was worth it, though:     I got pretty close to the adult, as she wasn't moving off as a rabbit normally would. And when she did, it was only to hop a bit down the embankment on my right (north side). As I was slowly passing by I saw the second rabbit and snapped the (third) pic, and it was only when I got home and downloaded them that I saw it was a young one, and presumably the reason the adult/mom wasn't going very far.  I hope they stayed safe; they were adjacent to a major thoroughfare, and while they had a huge overgrown green space to their north, if they got scared and das...

Staycation Day 4: Doing my bit for the economy

Image
I went to Walmart yesterday for a couple of items, then walked over to the main shopping centre/bus transfer point. Surprisingly, the mall was open, even though it was before 10AM. I'd thought they would be on Sunday hours, because of the holiday, but nope. On a whim I popped into Sears to look through the women's clothing section, then made my way over to shoes. I never look there for shoes, because my feet are so hard to fit. However, I scored a pair of Clarke's shoes for work, already on sale, then an additional 30% off at the cash register. Good buy! Then it was just a few more errands, including a stop at PetValu for the canned food I'd ordered. One of the store cats checks out my purchases. The for-adoption tortie, with serious tortitude, got snitty with Oliver, the other store cat. They got into it until Oliver managed to break free and run to a safer distance.     She's a lovely cat, but will need a human who appreciates that attitude, bit...

Thanks for the visit, Mr. Murphy

It's an unwritten law of the Universe that your washing machine will die after (or during) the wash cycle, but before the spin cycle.  On a Sunday at 5AM. On a long holiday weekend.     I'm not going into details of how difficult it is to hand rinse sheets and towels in a spare (unused) litter box in your basement wash sink. Or how long it takes to bail out a washer full of dirty water. I'll just say that I'm waiting for the vacation fun to start!   Oh, and I did I mention that the sky looks ominous right now, like rain and thunder are in the offing? Peace .

I think my body has seized up

Alternatively titled, "You call this a day off?" Because I don't call being up at 3:30AM and doing 6 loads of laundry (including winter coats, curtains and bedding), steam-mopping floors, vacuuming, and purging 5 boxes of household goods and books plus 2 large garbage bags filled with clothes and old blankets restful. Especially considering it all entailed going up and down the stairs, upstairs to basement, 12,036 times. And that's not even getting any dusting done or cleaning the bathroom. Right now the boys are flaked out on my bed, poor things (said sarcastically). They didn't get to sleep the morning away because they were too busy "helping" me. Well, one was "helping" and the other was running away from the crazy lady toting all sorts of scary things around the house and out to the garage. I, too, would be flaked out on my bed right now, except my favourite daytime show (okay, it's the only one I watch) will be on in a hou...

Twenty-eight pairs of slacks later...

Image
...I actually found three that fit and that don't require hemming. Four pairs on Friday at Wal-Mart, eight pairs at Sears on Saturday and sixteen, yes, sixteen, pairs at Value Village today. Three at Value Village were great. Actually, one pair of jeans at Sears were perfect, great fit and the right length, but too pricey at $40. I don't buy anything that's not a good deal. There were two other pairs at Sears that fit nicely but were a bit too long and I don't like to hem. Besides, they were even more expensive than the jeans. (I tried them on only because the very nice, helpful sales clerk gave them to me.) However, I'm happy with today's slacks: two pairs of black (one denim, one light weight fabric for work) and one pair of navy striped cotton slacks. $5.99, $5.99 and $7.99, which beats one pair for $40 all to heck. Oh, I do love bargain shopping! BTW, the navy striped slacks must have had a very interesting scent accompanying them, as they prompted a bunn...
